Manage episode 344611146 series 3406870
In today’s episode, we get to chat with American Author, Kristen Britain, about what it takes to become a full-time author in an industry primarily dominated by men. Kristen is the Author of the epic fantasy novel series, the Green Rider, and today we discuss the realities of transitioning your passion as your part time job, to your full-time career. This takes planning, understanding, sacrifice, and learning to budgeting accordingly, especially once you begin making money from your craft/ business.
Entrepreneurship is ever present in the Green Rider series, if you know how to look. Kristen has captured the heart of an entrepreneur and independent woman through the story telling of her characters and the resilience they demonstrate through times of unknown; through the feelings of frustration and loneliness when they commit to a journey alone that they have no idea how the outcome will play out; through the feelings of honor and pride from being independent but understanding you are part of a team that will have your back if you surround yourself with a good support system and learn to empathize with one another; and finally, through the development of who the characters once were and how they actively grow as a result of all they have been through (good, bad, and unexpected). As Warrior Women in the World of Entrepreneurship, we can all relate to these feelings and realities though they may look different to each of us.
Important aspects that helped shaped Kristen’s journey to becoming a full-time author include:
- Being one of the few women that studied film production at Ithaca college during her time there
- Feeling lost after college not knowing exactly which direction in life to take
- Learning about women’s rights history pointed her to becoming a park ranger
- Understanding that writing has always been part of her life and creative process
- How practice within your craft/ business is essential to the growth and development of your business. That we are never too big or too experienced to improve in what we do
- Understanding that perseverance and practice will pay off if you have patience, persistence, and a plan
- Learning to not give up in the face of rejection, or sometimes in repeated rejection
- Knowing your brand and to not sell out to a company that won’t represent you or the integrity of your work. *Choose the one that will value and honor your work and still pay you your worth*
- How messages and lessons are better received sometimes with subtlety and intelligence rather than forcefully.
- How to budget the advance you receive after you receive a book deal.
