It’s something that all of us do every single day, multiple times a day, and we often don’t even give it a second thought. But while it’s easy to oversimplify the act of eating food, it’s not as easy to overstate the critical importance of the millions of pathways that process that food and fuel every action we take.
Our food has a long journey from start to finish in your digestive system, and there are so many factors that affect how successful that journey is in providing your body with the nutrients it needs to function efficiently. In this week’s episode, we continue our science-made simple series about biochemistry! After last week’s 101 introduction to biochemical pathways and nutrients, we’re now looking at how we consume and absorb those necessary nutrients every day. Taking a trip down the incredible process that is the digestive system, we’ll take a step-by-step approach to the path your food takes through it, and how our chemical pathways have evolved in precise ways to draw every possible nutrient out - and then put them to work. Not all foods are created equal, however! We’re also diving deeper into the value of those very nutrients and the varied nutrient density of our modern-day diet, and the common challenges that are facing us in a society fuelled by overconsumption and mass production. But no system is 100% perfect - we’ll be recognising the complex multifactorial effect of nutrient leeching, or nutrient loss, with a holistic approach that takes a broad view to heal the whole you and not just your symptoms.
We’re breaking down and digesting all the facts:
