It’s no secret that weight stigma and fatphobia is a real life major problem in the healthcare field. Many patients in larger bodies have their health concerns overlooked and are often dismissed or told to just lose weight. Losing weight isn’t always the answer, but when the medical field is promoting this practice, it’s hard to believe there’s anyone who is doing things differently. Well, this time around we’re speaking with someone who actually believes and practices the HAES approach in his own clinic. In today’s episode we are talking to Dr. Gregory Dodell, a board certified endocrinologist. In addition to being in private practice at Central Park endocrinology, Dr. Dodell is also active on social media posting a series of funny and informative reels! During our conversation Dr. Dodell shares what made him transition to becoming a weight inclusive doctor. He speaks on the stigma of weight in healthcare, why studies on weight loss are not always comprehensive, ways to reduce insulin resistance and how to find an inclusive provider. In this episode we cover:
  • Becoming a weight inclusive and Health At Every Size doctor [1:55]
  • The impacts of binging and weight cycling on the body [8:51]
  • Studies don’t always share the whole picture when it comes to weight loss and body size [12:00]
  • Reducing insulin resistance [15:51]
  • Weight stigma in the healthcare world [18:47]
  • Resources to find a HAES provider and how to foster a more inclusive space [22:27]
  • How to advocate for yourself if your provider focuses on weight loss [27:45]
