In this episode, host Holly Cotton and Amy Young discuss losing her daughter Remington to suicide. Amy tells us about her mission to address mental health awareness and stigmas in college athletics and how Remi’s story is living on and helping others.

Remington’s mother started her foundation “Love Like Remi” after Remington passed when others were so taken aback that someone “so beautiful and had everything in life” would take her life. She noticed so much ignorance on the subject and the stigma it brought. The thought that her daughter was “selfish” not only made me sad but it made her angry.

So angry she wanted to do something about it. She did a lot of research on statistics in sports and mental health. She was also told by so many others that she would be a perfect person to start a foundation around because it would make people pay attention.

She wanted to make sure this did not happen to another mother, father, family member or friend. She saw the pain in so MANY peoples eyes and watched them grieve and suffer. I don’t want that to continue to happen as well as educate athletes on the subject. She currently works with high schools and colleges speaking to athletes and youth about Remingtons story.

LLR has recently partnered with Pando Initiative and USD 266 (Remingtons school district) to raise money to staff 5 counselors in elementary schools to help with mental health and at risk kids. They are looking to collaborate with KU to put ambassadors within the sports teams to help with mental health prior to crisis as well as education.

They hope current practices for insurances/laws to help with coverage are changed and hope to raise enough money to put “HOPE” centers on college campuses to help student athletes/students with a place to go to find mental health resources at little to no cost someday.

Per Amy: “We have to do better. I do all of this because I truly believe that if Remington would have continued with therapy and had the necessary resources she would still be with us today. We failed her. She quit therapy when insurance ran out (after 12 visits and a 10k bill) and she worried about hurting me financially so she didn’t tell anyone she had quit. That was the unselfish girl we all knew and loved so deeply. “
