Welcome back to the ClinicalAthlete Student Shenanigans! On this week’s episode, we have Andrew Gillihan with a background of a Master’s in Kinesiology and Behavioral Sciences and is now a current DPT student with a heavy interest in men’s pelvic floor and tactical athletes. Are you in a PT or chiropractic program and feeling like you’re not treated like an adult and being forced to treat your professors as superiors that can affect the relationships and environment that you are learning in? Maybe you feel like these programs are too focused on the Board exams and not enough on the best and newest research and expectations of being in the “real-world”? If you are a member of Clinical Athlete or Level Up, you are most likely a progressive thinker and find yourself extremely frustrated with the quality of most of these programs. Maybe even frustrated with some of your peers. Andrew and the CA Student Shenanigans crew dive into some of these common frustrations and ideas of how to gain the respect of your peers, professors and to start making a change in these programs. The team also dives into Andrew’s interest and his own business, Stoic Physical Therapy, that is built on stoicism and being a good human. He has started with the HoneyBadger Project and is serving veterans and military members, focusing on health, healing and wellness and diving into pelvic health within this population. Just to remind all you listeners, Quinn and Steph have started this new series to dive into the details about some of their own clinical cases. Quinn, one of the leaders of all the craziness that ClinicalAthlete is, also does some pretty cool things clinically. His office is inside of a weightlifting gym, so naturally, he specializes in working with barbell sport athletes. Case: A female weightlifter, powerlifter, Strongman competitor, gym-owner and coach (woah!) recovering from a concussion. She is having troubles with her ability to exert force against external load and is finding some positional boundaries due to onset of concussive symptoms that can last a day or two. How do you begin graded exposure if there are no preceding factors to tell if symptoms are about to take over? Steph speaks on the importance of a clinician’s confidence in situations like this and how it can make the programming you provide for your client even more effective. Happy listening! Ever dive into the research for a whole weekend and then just had NoOoO idea how to apply it to your client on Monday morning? Or even better, you figure out how to apply it and quickly realize it just didn’t work? Maybe you’re an athlete who is having a hard time digesting all the info regarding training and injuries on the good ole’ internet? This show is for you. John and Jared have been reflecting on their own experiences and the conversations they’ve had with previous ClinicalAthlete Podcast guests. They’ve gained tons of insights as both coaches and athletes because of this, but they knew that a lot of coaches and athletes were still struggling to make sense of it all. Enter The Nameless Series! (Don’t worry, YOU’RE going to help us name it!) This is a laid-back, informal series all about how to blend being a coach and an athlete, helping you and your athletes perform better, and finding comfort in the “grey area”. The guys want to use this show to pass on what they’ve learned so far and what they’re learning now, so you can learn from it too. They’ll be bringing on influential guests from the athletic and coaching worlds that have wisdom to share – you’ll probably recognize some of them! During this very first episode, John issues a “hair-off” challenge to Omar Isuf! The duo also talk about how much they love watching the little wins with their athletes and getting to know them more than just an athlete. They emphasize the importance of finding that blend of using the scientific-research but also connecting on a deeper level with your athletes and coaches. Make sure to keep an eye on John, Jared, and ClinicalAthlete’s Instagrams to vote for a name to this new series! This episode is a little different. As some of you may know, ClinicalAthlete has joined forces with The Level Up Initiative to put together a special educational experience - the CALU Summit, on Sept 18-20, 2020. It goes without saying, that the year of 2020 has required all of us to pivot. The Summit was no exception. This podcast is all about what it means for the communities of ClinicalAthlete and Level Up to join forces and pursue this mission together. We talk about the importance of a cohesive team, how to deal with hardships along the way, why it’s important to keep an agile approach to planning, and why the CALU Summit is different. Yes, you will get all the deets about the event itself in this episode from the unique model that we've created, to our amazing line up of presenters and sponsors; but you’ll also get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to put something like this on, and what it means to work within a Mission-Driven Team.
