Ep 10 - What Nursing School Doesn't Teach You

Let's talk about a few things I wish nursing school should be teaching students!
Now, I don't want to sound too idealistic. Nursing school won't teach you everything you need know before going into the real world. Some things you'll just have to learn on the job because there's no possible way you'll get the training while in school... and that's okay.

But here's what I think should have been covered -- or at least, focused on more in detail -- while in nursing school:
Empathizing with others

• Though you can't teach people to care, you can teach empathetic techniquess
• We've gotten so "sciencey", we forgot the power of tender, loving care
• Sometimes all our patient's need is someone to listen
• Call me crazy... but I believe love actually helps people heal

How to process trauma

• A large variety of specialties deal with life vs death situations continuously
• Many nurses experience actual PTSD from work
• Knowing this will prepare us to better serve patient's and families
• Nurses should remain steady in the most challenging moments of life

Healthy relationship building

• Build rapport and trust with patients and families
• Become the best coworker you can be for a better work environment
• How to deal with difficult people
• Healthy living in your community

Comprehensive list of options for nurse specialties/jobs

• Avoid the limited mindset that you can only work at a hospital
• Find a job you're passionate about
• Grow your profession and work at the highest scope of your license
• Find freedom and live a fulfilling life

At the end of the day, even though nursing school doesn't teach you everything you need to know... IT'S NOT AN EXCUSE to stay stagnant. Let's commit to ALWAYS be learning new things and growing ourselves into better nurses and people.
