When a trusted physician tells Renée Schuls-Jacobson that he has the solution for her chronic insomnia -- a "tried & true medication without any side effects," she believes him.
For seven years, she takes clonazepam exactly as prescribed until, one day, she learns that her doctor is wrong: long-term prescription benzodiazepine use causes all kinds of problems, including profound changes in brain function.
While healing from an iatrogenic brain injury, Renée had to unlearn a lot of bad cultural messaging. She learned to trust her intuition & her body above everything else, and she discovered a new ability – her creativity – which has turned into her greatest strength, led to confidence and brought her to her current beautiful and fulfilling life chapter.
Nearly nine years after her injury, Renée's brain is mostly healed. Today, she is an independent artist whose paintings hang in private collections throughout the world. In addition to painting & teaching art classes, Renee is also a Certified Peer Recovery Advocate offering emotional support to individuals who have withdrawal from their psychiatric medications. Renee has written the book Psychiatrized-Waking Up After a Decade of Bad Medicine
Her home & studio are in Rochester, NY.
