Fellowship and Discipleship - Why We Need Both
Manage episode 290317570 series 2901197
Discipleship can be both formal and informal, as older Christian's mentor, teach, provide accountability and guide younger Christian's in life and their relationship with Jesus. As we mature in our faith, we are also called to be disciples to younger Christians and pass on the wisdom that comes with being discipled ourselves and from being in relationship with God.

- Christianity is not a solo endeavor and is meant to be done in the context of relationships and community.
- The whole point of fellowship and discipleship is to care for one another and point each other back to Jesus.
- What is Discipleship and how does it differ from Mentorship?
- There is both formal (intentional & structured) discipleship and informal/organic discipleship that naturally happens in the course of living life
- Discipleship is essential for the health of Christians... especially so for men, since we tend to be less social and try to live "as an island" and "loan wolf" it, not being in close relationship with other men
-
- Woman tend to be more relational and social, interacting "face-to-face", while men tend to be more task/project oriented when relating to other men, working on a common goal "side-by-side"
- Peer relationships have more of a fellowship focus with "iron sharpening iron", while discipleship tends to involve one person being older and in a different life stage who can speak experience and wisdom into the younger person's life.
- We are not called to be perfect, we are called to be faithful to God.
- Relationships and community is risky, difficult and messy but necessary and worth it.
