Michael Sugrue is a National Speaker, Author, U.S Air Force Veteran, Retired Police Sergeant and Mental Health Advocate from Walnut Creek, California that is creating change for First Responders and those within the emergency services.
He speaks about mental health for law enforcement and how to create positive change for those that suffer within it. He focuses on suicide prevention for first responders, trauma healing and posts traumatic Stress Recovery.
He started off his career at the U.S Air Force as a Security Forces Officer, specializing in Law Enforcement, Global Force Protection, Anti-Terrorism, Nuclear Security, Foreign Air Field Assessments and Air Base Ground Defense. He served in a variety of assignments including Flight Leader, Flight Commander, Senior Watch Officer, Chief of Command Post and Chief of Security Forces.
Michael Sugrue served all over the United States, Europe, the Middle East and South America. He was also a Security Forces Phoenix Raven with the unique identifier of #1173. Michael honourably separated from the Air Force as a Captain in 2004.
Immediately after the Air Force, Michael was hired by the Walnut Creek Police Department where he served in a variety of assignments including Patrol Officer, Driver Training Instructor (EVOC) Field Training Officer (FTO), SIU Detective, Undercover CA DOJ Narcotic Task Force Agent (Contra Costa County), Public Information Officer (PIO) and Patrol Sergeant.
Michael was awarded the Walnut Creek PD Distinguished Service Medal in 2014 for his heroic and life-saving actions during a Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in 2012.
He decided to retire from the position in 2018. He is now a Peer Volunteer at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat (WCPR) and an Ambassador for Save A Warrior (SAW).
Michael is a dedicated advocate for awareness, prevention, education, training on Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) and First Responder Suicide Prevention. Michael continues to speak at law enforcement agencies all over the United States and across the world.
Speaking with Michael Sugrue helped me understand the seriousness of mental health for first responders and those within the emergency services.
Michael Sugrue is speaking about this worldwide issue throughout North America. He is impacting millions and truly creating positive impact and change for those in the emergency services. It is amazing to hear his perspectives and be genuine in his craft. Was truly inspiring words and a great connection that I had. He truly digs deep on the issues that are happening today for those within law enforcement. There is time to change and it is now. You can always ask for help. We are all human and we encourage you to do what it takes to make your soul, body and mind at peace. Its great to interview individuals like him because he is a warrior that is creating positive change in the world we live in today.
In Michael Sugrue's heavy presence on social media he discusses the fact that as of October 22nd, 2021 Law Enforcement Officer suicides alone are at 120 for this year. Last year there were 174 reported Officer suicides.
Another 371 officers have died in the line of duty; bringing the overall total of lives lost to 491 for 2021.
