Learning through first-hand experience is likely the most impactful way to successfully absorb information when training and preparing for the next big emergency. Unfortunately, many areas throughout the US and the rest of the world had plenty of first-hand experience with the COVID pandemic, especially in the earliest and scariest stages. Southeast Michigan was hit pretty hard by COVID and the city of Southfield, located in Oakland County, MI, which is just north of Detroit, and was Michigan’s ground zero for the COVID-19 pandemic and the Southfield Fire Department was forced into a very stressful, but overall successful operation. In this episode, we sit down with Chief Johnny Menifee, and Captain Melissa Medici from Southfield Fire Department to discuss what it was like to endure the early stages of the pandemic, as well as what they’re doing now to maintain EMS operations and safety.
