Are you a parent of a special needs child? Do you struggle with finding community and connection? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has Julie Hornok on the show. Julie is the co-founder of Labeled and Loved which is a non-profit organization that is passionate about empowering women to find grace, acceptance and strength in the midst of even the toughest circumstances life has to offer. Humbled by parenting kids with extra needs, she works to build community for those who feel alone and spread her message of hope to anyone who will listen.
Paige’s Takeaways:
- We can focus on what our kids can do. Flip the script and walk through the positives of their day to day so we also have that mindshift. If we focus on the negatives just think about how discouraging that can be to us as parents but also to our children. We can still grieve the things that they can’t do.
- Stop caring about what other parents think. Don’t focus on the opinions of others around you, instead focus on what is best for your own child at that moment.
- Find Community. We cannot be doing this alone. IT doesn’t matter if you have special needs kids or able-bodied kids. We can allow other trusted people to speak into our kids' lives. Be intentional about who we are allowing into our lives and our kids lives.
