Sermon: Jesus the Generous One

Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-2

Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and GAVE himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

INTRODUCTION: Jesus modeled generosity and calls his followers to be generous also.

Jesus was generous when he encountered human need.

When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:13-14 NIV)

Jesus was generous when it didn't benefit him personally.

Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that. (Ephesians 5:2 The Message Bible)

Jesus was generous with the right attitude.

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets... (Matthew 6:2 NIV)

CONCLUSION: For God so loved the world that he gave... (John 3:16 NIV) Giving flows from a generous heart.
