In this episode, we break the silence around money and the emotional weight it carries, especially for high-achieving women. We explore the cycle of financial ups and downs, the shame tied to money missteps, and the importance of shifting mindsets for long-term success. Tune in as we discuss the power of financial accountability, the impact of deep-seated beliefs, and the steps to gaining confidence and control over your finances. Key Takeaways: If You Don’t See It, Be It – When the guidance you need isn’t available, you have the power to create it. Too often, financial spaces overlook women, especially Black women, leaving them unheard and underserved. But instead of accepting the gap, we can fill it—becoming the advisors, mentors, and leaders we once searched for. Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs – Money stress isn’t just about debt—it’s shaped by workplace inequities, family pressures, and childhood messages about wealth. Many women carry silent burdens, but true financial freedom begins with shifting the mindset, challenging old beliefs, and claiming what we deserve. Turning Income into Lasting Wealth – Generational financial trauma is real, but we can’t stay stuck in it. High earnings don’t equal wealth—they’re just a tool for building it. True financial success starts with mindset: recognizing limiting beliefs, leaning into empowering ones, and making intentional choices that turn income into lasting wealth. Why Talking About Money Matters - Money shame is real, even for high-achieving professionals, but staying silent only gives it more power. Like mental health, normalizing financial conversations helps break free from guilt and fear. True wealth starts with reshaping beliefs, asking the right questions, and gaining the confidence to take control of your finances. Taking Control of Your Wealth Starts with Your Mindset - True empowerment comes from realizing that while we can't control everything, we can control our mindset, learning, and the people we surround ourselves with. Growth happens when we engage in the right conversations with those who genuinely want to see us win—whether in life, business, or finances. Helpful Resources: Building Wealth with Smart Investments – Wealth isn’t about appearances; it’s about strategy. Maximize your 401(k), explore solo plans if self-employed, and balance risk with secure investments. Wealth isn’t just about earning—it’s about making strategic moves that secure your future. The Purposeful Spending Plan – A Purposeful Spending Plan (PSP) ensures that your money works for you, not the other way around. It’s not about restriction—it’s about balance. Too often, high earners find themselves living paycheck to paycheck because income alone doesn’t create wealth—intentional money management does. Why Financial Checkups Matter - Financial well-being is a key part of overall wellness, just like physical and mental health. We schedule regular doctor visits, yet many avoid financial checkups due to fear, shame, or the belief that high earners should automatically be good with money. But money management is about habits, not income. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, we continue our exploration of difficult conversations—this time, moving from conflict to courageous collaboration. We break down the stages of conflict, the power of self-awareness, and the role of courageous conversations in restoring relationships. Tune in to learn how embracing discomfort can lead to deeper connections and lasting change. Key Takeaways: Difficult Conversations Are Not Always Calm - Many people believe that resolving conflict requires calm, emotionless discussions. In reality, conflict often involves emotional highs and lows. It’s normal for conversations to escalate before resolution happens. Understanding Your Conflict Style - People handle conflict differently—some react immediately, while others need time to process before responding. Recognizing your style can help you navigate disagreements more effectively. Unspoken Feelings Can Lead to Escalation - Holding in emotions instead of addressing them can intensify conflict. In this case, withdrawing created distance between two colleagues until it was finally confronted. Naming emotions early can prevent misunderstandings. Restoration Comes After Resolution - The final stage of conflict is healing. Once both parties feel heard and understood, trust can be rebuilt. This process takes time but strengthens relationships in the long run. Helpful Resources: Turning Points Lead to Resolution - Sometimes, an outside perspective can shift how we see a situation. Reflection helps soften our approach and makes room for healing conversations. Courageous Conversations Require Responsibility - Owning your part in a conflict, without excuses, builds trust. The “five-step apology” framework—acknowledging impact, expressing understanding, sharing your feelings, stating your commitment, and defining boundaries—can lead to real resolution. Notable Highlights: "Conflict has an escalation phase.” "Taking responsibility for your contribution to a conflict, without excessive justification or excuses, is a courageous step toward resolution." "Conflict can shift into collaboration when both parties recognize each other’s lived experiences and start discussing the future instead of dwelling on the past." "Once resolution happens, healing can begin." "The climax of conflict isn’t always a big blowout. It can be a series of tense conversations until something shifts." "Compromise and resolution conversations are what restore trust and safety in relationships over time." "In high stress, we often default to survival responses from our past trauma and upbringing—no matter how much work we’ve done on ourselves." "We must have compassion for ourselves when we fall into survival responses. We are not perfect; we are human." "Even when harm is done, it can be mended. It takes courage and a willingness to be responsible for one’s actions." "At least one person must step up and lean into discomfort for resolution to happen." Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I sit down with a familiar face to talk about the power of love, connection, and community in uncertain times. We discuss how fear and anxiety can disconnect us, and why cultivating a non-anxious presence is an act of love and leadership. Through the Loving Leader framework—Listening, Openness, Vulnerability, Inner work, Nurturing, and recognizing the Gift in others—we explore what it truly means to lead with love, in life and in the workplace. Tune in as we unpack how embracing our gifts, fostering psychological safety, and living in alignment can create spaces where we all thrive. Key Takeaways: The Power of Love and Community - Life is not meant to be lived alone. We are built for connection, for love, and for being part of a supportive community. In times of fear and uncertainty, it can feel natural to withdraw, but true strength comes from leaning into love and relationships. Thinking with the Heart - True wisdom isn’t just about thinking—it’s about integrating the heart, mind, and body. For too long, we’ve been conditioned to rely solely on intellect, acting as “walking heads” disconnected from our emotions. But real understanding comes from wholeness. The Loving Leader Framework - Leading with love means creating spaces where people can thrive. The Loving Leader Framework guides us in this mission: Listening deeply, staying Open in heart and mind, embracing Vulnerability, doing Inner work, Nurturing safe spaces, and Giving honor to others’ gifts. Love Over Shame - Healing begins with naming our reality, even when we'd rather avoid it. Shame isolates, but love is greater than fear, hurt, or doubt. When we commit to healing, we make space for life beyond pain, even when we can’t yet see it. Love, Boundaries, and Capacity - Just as the oil in the biblical story flowed only when there was space to receive it, our capacity grows when we make room for healing, presence, and grace. Receiving is just as vital as giving—allowing us to pour from a place of abundance, not depletion. Feelings Are Data – Emotions are information, guiding us toward healing and clarity. Instead of dismissing them, we can see them as tools for self-discovery. Inner work is a privilege—an invitation to know and honor your true self. Helpful Resources: Emotional Awareness Creates Choice – Understanding both negative and positive emotions deepens self-awareness. Noticing how emotions feel in the body—whether anger, joy, or anticipation—helps discern whether you're moving toward or away from your values. Depositing Joy – Joy is found in small, meaningful moments—like receiving a gifted scarf with a rich story. Naming and savoring these moments builds a "joy bank," a reserve of reminders that love and connection are transformative. Choosing Love Over Fear – Fear may linger, but love, joy, and connection thrive with intention. While stress hormones stay in our system longer, the effects of love and hope fade faster—calling us to seek them out, again and again. Love is the resistance, the remedy, and the way forward. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I talk about how assumptions shape our thoughts and actions. I break down two key types—assuming authority and assuming intent—and how they can lead to misunderstandings and poor decisions. From social media to daily life, I share why it’s important to pause, clarify, and think before jumping to conclusions. Tune in as we get to the root cause of why we make assumptions and how we can shift our mindset to build better, more thoughtful connections. Key Takeaways: Question Your Assumptions - Our brains automatically make assumptions to process information quickly, but unchecked assumptions can lead to reckless and even dangerous thinking. Expand Your Awareness - Paying attention to body language, tone, and emotional shifts can reveal deeper meanings. Developing "listening intelligence" helps us recognize when clarification is needed, preventing unnecessary tension in personal and professional relationships. Pause Before Reacting - Our emotions can hijack rational thinking, especially when past experiences shape our assumptions. Before reacting, take a moment to assess: Am I responding based on fact or feeling? Practicing emotional awareness allows for more thoughtful and constructive conversations. Assumption of Authority – Believing something is true just because it comes from a seemingly credible source, like a social media post or a person in a leadership role. Without verifying the context or source, misinformation spreads like a game of telephone. Assumption of Intent – The assumption of intent happens when we believe we know why someone said or did something—without asking them. Instead of clarifying their true motives, we assign meaning based on our personal experiences, emotions, or biases. Helpful Resources: Verify Sources, Check Facts - Not everything we hear or read is true, and blindly accepting information can lead to spreading misinformation or making poor decisions. Before reacting, it’s important to consider the credibility of the source, cross-check facts, and seek additional perspectives. Taking the time to verify information ensures that our beliefs and actions are based on truth rather than hearsay or manipulation. Improve Communication, Prevent False Assumptions - Good communication is not just about speaking; it’s about listening with the intent to understand rather than just to respond. Practicing active listening, managing emotions, and asking thoughtful questions can help prevent misunderstandings and foster better relationships. Notable Highlights: “Without clarification and verification, a message can get wildly distorted.” “Recognizing that we're always assuming is the first step because our brain is constantly building stories and meaning.” “When we start to lean into clarifying conversations, we mitigate so much harm in our communication and interactions.” “We never know what kind of day a person is having until we interact with them and clarify and verify.” Follow Dr. Maiysha on Social media Facebook: www.facebook.com/DrMaiysha Instagram: www.instagram.com/DrMaiysha Youtube: www.YouTube.com/DrMaiysha Hosted by: Dr. Maiysha Clairborne Communication is the foundation of everything and everything happens in communication. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, Dr. Maiysha sits down with organizational psychologist and workplace culture expert Jason Cochran to explore the 4 Principles of Connection —a powerful framework for creating healthier, more fulfilling work environments. They discuss how workplace culture impacts mental health, why toxic work environments have reached a public health crisis level, and how leaders can design work experiences that prioritize well-being, trust, and engagement. Tune in to learn how to shift from burnout culture to conscious leadership and create organizations where people thrive. Key Takeaways The Hidden Crisis of Workplace Burnout - Burnout, stress, and toxic work environments are no longer just individual issues—they have become a public health concern. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has acknowledged the urgent need to address these problems. The 4 Principles of Connection at Work - To create a workplace where people feel engaged and fulfilled, organizations must design for connection in four key ways: Connection to Self – Helping employees develop self-awareness and align their work with their strengths and values. Connection to Others – Building trust, safety, and authentic relationships within teams. Connection to Role – Ensuring employees are in positions that energize them and align with their skills. Connection to Organization – Creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose within the company. The Future of Work: Conscious Capitalism - The traditional workplace model often prioritizes profit over people. Conscious capitalism shifts the focus to creating sustainable success by valuing both business outcomes and employee well-being. How Leaders Can Design Better Work Environments - By applying human-centered design, leaders can transform their organizations into places where people feel seen, heard, and valued—resulting in higher job satisfaction, productivity, and retention. Helpful Resources How Psychological Safety Impacts Performance - When employees feel safe, respected, and valued, they take more risks, contribute innovative ideas, and feel greater job satisfaction. The Cost of Ignoring Workplace Well-Being - High turnover, low engagement, and burnout do not just affect employees—they cost companies millions in lost productivity and hiring expenses. Coaching for Leadership and Workplace Transformation - External coaching helps leaders develop the skills to foster connection, engagement, and high-performing teams. Notable Highlights "One of the happiest things in life that can happen to a human being is when they work somewhere that cares about their 5 to 9 as much as their 9 to 5." – Jason Cochran "The way you build trust as an organization is not by telling people to trust you—it is by showing up for them first." "Toxic work cultures have reached epidemiological levels. If we do not shift how we design work, we will not have enough healthcare professionals, educators, or frontline workers to meet demand." "Great leadership is not about control—it is about creating an environment where people feel safe, valued, and inspired to contribute their best work." About Jason Cochran Jason Cochran is a licensed psychologist of 15+ years and the co-founder of human-centered technology companies iAspire and Dulead in Indianapolis. Fascinated with the exploration of human potential, Jason’s work has been to build scalable solutions that attract, develop, and retain talent. Jason’s 4 Principles of Connection™️ model creates purpose through meaningful employee experiences. The model addresses the innate needs for meaningful work that leads to fulfillment. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I’m talking about protecting your focus in a world full of distractions. From social media noise to psychological manipulation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I’ll share practical ways to recognize distractions, quiet the noise, and stay present through mindfulness, movement, and intentional joy. Tune in to take back control of your attention and show up fully for what truly matters. Key Takeaways: The Overload of Information - The constant flood of news, social media, and political updates can be overwhelming. It’s easy to feel consumed by headlines, debates, and opinions. When we are surrounded by so much noise, it becomes harder to stay focused on what truly matters. Recognizing Distractions for What They Are - Not everything we consume is valuable information. Some of it is designed to distract or even manipulate us. It’s important to step back and ask: Is this helping me grow, or is it wearing me down? Recognizing distractions is the first step to regaining control. Finding Your Role and Influence - When faced with overwhelming issues, it’s easy to feel powerless. But we all have a role to play within our own circles. Instead of trying to fix everything, focus on what you can do—whether in your work, family, or community. Small actions create meaningful change. The Power of Community - Surrounding yourself with supportive people is key. A strong community uplifts, reminds you of your worth, and helps you stay grounded. Whether at work, home, or in the world at large, having the right people around you makes all the difference. Helpful Resources: Turning Down the Volume - One of the best ways to protect our peace is to limit our exposure to unnecessary noise. This might mean reducing social media use, choosing only a few reliable news sources, or stepping away from conversations that drain our energy. Less noise means more clarity. Creating a Focused Routine - Establishing daily habits helps strengthen our mental resilience. This could be meditation, exercise, reading, or even listening to music—anything that brings calm and stability. Intentional practices like gratitude, laughter, and play can serve as resistance against the negativity that surrounds us. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode with Len Sturdivant, we explore the roots of toxic work relationships, the impact of narcissism in workplace culture, and how personal struggles often show up on the job. We discuss how traits like stubbornness or unresolved issues can contribute to toxicity and highlight the employer’s role in fostering a healthy, supportive work environment. Tune in as we uncover workplace toxicity and how leaders can foster accountability, well-being, and productivity. Key Takeaways: The Power of Acknowledging Personal Struggles - Unspoken struggles don’t stay hidden—they seep into every area of life. When personal challenges go unaddressed, they create stress, impact performance, and strain relationships. Acknowledging and talking about them isn’t weakness; it’s the first step toward resolution and growth. Recognizing Narcissism in the Workplace - Narcissism takes many forms, and it can quietly disrupt workplaces and relationships. Some seek attention by playing the hero, while others manipulate behind a friendly mask. What is Altruistic Narcissism? - Altruistic narcissists thrive on being seen as heroes. They help others, not out of selflessness, but to receive praise and validation. When their admiration is threatened they may resort to competition, manipulation, or sabotage to restore their sense of superiority. The Covert Narcissist’s Power - Covert narcissists thrive on secrecy and control, targeting those who outshine them. They quietly sabotage others while maintaining an innocent facade, ensuring their superiority remains unchallenged. Helpful Resources: The Power of Boundaries in the Workplace - Highly sensitive and nurturing employees often attract difficult personalities, including narcissists. Their kindness and teamwork can make them easy targets. Setting clear boundaries and learning to say “no” helps protect them and maintain a healthy workplace. Protecting Yourself from Narcissists - Narcissists respond to only five things: shame, exposure, leverage, force, and consequence. If your boundaries don’t come with real consequences, they’ll be ignored. Setting limits is important, but enforcing them is what truly protects you. The CEO’s Role in Workplace Culture - CEOs set the tone for workplace culture. When they are actively involved, real change happens. However, leadership can be isolating, and CEOs may need their own safe space to address challenges. Supporting them strengthens the entire organization. About Len Sturdivant Len Sturdivant is a psychologist, relationship expert, and hiring strategist. As the owner of Relationship Coach Pro, he helps individuals and businesses build healthier relationships. Recognizing the link between dating and hiring, he developed personality assessments to improve hiring decisions. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I share a personal story of navigating difficult conversations that led to resolution and growth. I discuss how conflict doesn’t need to be "perfectly" calm to be productive and the importance of emotional regulation, trust, and responsibility in resolving conflict. I emphasize that while these conversations can be challenging, they offer opportunities for deeper understanding and transformation. Tune in for insights on handling tough conversations with courage and compassion. Key Takeaways: The Power of Difficult Conversations - Difficult conversations are a necessary part of growth, both personally and in relationships. Avoiding them can lead to unresolved tension, while facing them with the right mindset fosters understanding. Letting Go of 'Perfect' Conflict Resolution - There is a common myth that conflict should always be resolved in a calm and controlled manner, but that is not always realistic. Emotions naturally escalate in disagreements, and learning to navigate them is an important skill. The Five-Step Apology and Accountability - A genuine apology is more than just saying “sorry.” It requires taking full responsibility, acknowledging the impact of one’s actions, and making a commitment to change. By incorporating these steps, individuals can rebuild trust, demonstrate accountability, and show that they value the relationship enough to make amends. The Role of Communication and Compromise - Conflict can linger when neither side backs down, but resolution comes through honest conversations and compromise. Healing begins once common ground is found, with trust rebuilding over time. Though challenging, these discussions strengthen relationships. The Messy Path to Conflict Resolution - Conflict resolution isn’t a straight path—it comes with ups, downs, and setbacks. You may find resolution, only to face new challenges. What matters is the courage to engage in honest conversations and a commitment to making things right. Healing takes practice, patience, and emotional regulation. Helpful Resource: Turning Conflict into Collaboration - Conflicts don’t have to create division; they can serve as opportunities for teamwork and mutual growth. Shifting from a defensive mindset to a problem-solving approach, respecting different perspectives and working toward solutions together creates more productive relationships. Addressing Conflict in Organizations - Constant conflict within a team can make it difficult to maintain a healthy work environment. The key is to uncover the root issues—who feels unheard, unseen, or undervalued. By fostering open communication and providing the right tools, organizations can create a more collaborative and supportive workplace. Understanding Your Own Conflict Responses - People handle conflict differently, and self-awareness is key to improving communication. Some individuals react immediately, while others need time to process their emotions before responding. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, we explore reproductive justice and disparities in women’s health, focusing on women’s rights to make decisions about their bodies, including access to abortion. Dr. Lodhi highlights how systemic racism affects women of color, particularly Black women, in their health journeys, including menopause. She also discusses the need for specialized care, such as hormone therapy. Tune in as we get to the root cause of health disparities and how women can advocate for better care. Key Takeaways: What is Reproductive Justice- Reproductive justice ensures that every woman has the right to make choices about her body, including access to healthcare and the freedom to have children or not. At its core, it’s about autonomy—allowing women to make these decisions without legal or political restrictions. Menopause Care Disparities -Women often face challenges accessing proper care during menopause, with their symptoms sometimes being dismissed. It’s crucial that women receive the same quality of care in menopause as they do during their childbearing years, as menopause can impact their health in various ways. The Impact of Systemic Racism on Health- Being African American is linked to higher health risks like high blood pressure, not because of race, but because of the ongoing effects of systemic racism. Constant stress raises cortisol levels, which changes DNA and makes African American women more prone to health problems. The Importance of Being Heard -People want to be listened to and validated by their healthcare providers. Finding someone who understands your experience, or at least empathizes with it, can make a world of difference in your care. Helpful Resource: Red Flags to Watch Out for When Advocating for Yourself- A major red flag is when a doctor dismisses your concerns or becomes defensive instead of offering help. If this happens, it's time to find a new practitioner who listens and validates your experience. Your health matters, and you deserve a doctor who believes you. About Dr. Sadaf Lodhi Dr. Sadaf Lodhi is a board-certified OB-GYN with over 20 years of experience helping women achieve sexual, physical, and emotional wellness. As a physician, sexual counselor, and founder of Femme Vie Health, she provides compassionate care and guidance for women seeking confidence and fulfillment in their intimate lives. Dr. Sadaf understands cultural pressures and helps women embrace their sexuality with confidence. Her goal is simple: to help every woman feel healthy, empowered, and in control of her body. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I talk about the power of accountability in reaching personal and professional goals. We’ll look at how setting clear goals, breaking them into small steps, and staying committed can make a big difference. I also share the value of having a trusted accountability partner and creating a supportive environment where dreams can grow. Tune in as we explore why staying on track can be tough and how the right support leads to lasting change. Key Takeaways: Why Accountability Matters - One reason people fail to follow through is that they don’t know how to hold themselves accountable. It’s easy to set goals, but without a clear plan to stay on track, those goals often fade away. The Slippery Slope of Accountability - Holding yourself accountable is powerful, but having a community that keeps you in check is life-changing. When we start slipping on our commitments, it’s easy to lose momentum. That’s why we must surround ourself with people who challenge us to be our best. Accountability Starts with Structure - The first step to holding yourself accountable is to clarify your goal. Remember, structure and clarity are the key ingredients to turning your commitments into actions. The Art of Holding Others Accountable - Holding others accountable is just as much of a skill as holding ourselves accountable. By understanding what matters most to people and making commitments clear, we can help each other stay on track, build trust, and reach our goals together. The Language of Accountability - Holding others accountable is about clear communication, aligning their actions with their commitments, and supporting them in staying on track. Helpful Resources: Commitment Over Motivation - Motivation isn’t always going to be there, but your commitment will carry you through. When your actions, goals, and accountability are aligned with your values, it becomes easier to stay on track and keep returning to the behaviors that lead to success. Find an Accountability Partner - While self-discipline is important, having an accountability partner is a game-changer. Knowing that someone is there to check in with you, someone who truly cares about your success, can make all the difference in staying committed. In this episode with Dr. Ekaette Joseph-Isang, we discuss her shift from clinical medicine to healthcare consulting and entrepreneurship. She shares how her passion for helping physicians and improving healthcare processes led to the creation of RiteBridge LLC. Dr. Eka also talks about the challenges and successes of transitioning to the business side of healthcare, and how strategic learning and work-life balance shaped her journey. This conversation highlights how career transitions can be an opportunity for growth and aligning with your true purpose. Key Takeaways: Improving Patient Care Through Smarter Workflows -Patients often feel rushed and disconnected from their doctors, leading to complaints about the quality of care due to systemic inefficiencies. Therefore, delegating responsibilities to other team members can help ease the burden on physicians while maintaining efficiency. A Career of Learning and Growth in Healthcare - Everyone’s career path looks different. Some start unsure of their path, while others face challenges even with a clear goal. Moving into a leadership position takes learning, hard work, and sometimes a leap of faith, but it’s all worth it when you find your place. Overcoming Career Barriers in a New Country - Immigrant professionals show great resilience when they have to rebuild their careers in a new country. While it’s tough to start over, training programs can help them transition into new roles and use their skills in different ways. Their ability to adapt is truly inspiring. Helpful Resource: Embracing Career Transitions - Career transitions aren’t just about jumping to the next job—they’re about strategically educating yourself and structuring your career around the life you want to live. Instead of shaping your life around your job, shape your job around your life. The Power of Adaptability - In the 21st century, being able to learn, unlearn, and relearn is more important than just knowing how to read and write. The world is constantly changing, and being flexible and open to new ideas is essential. About Dr. Ekaette Joseph-Isang Ekaette Joseph-Isang, MD, MBA, MPH, CPHQ, is a physician, healthcare consultant, speaker, and founder of RiteBridge LLC. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I’m sharing the key difference between leading from fear and leading with empowerment. I’ll explain how fear-based leadership can drain energy, kill creativity, and lead to burnout. We’ll dive into emotional intelligence, trust, and psychological safety, and I’ll show how shifting to a focus on empowerment helps both leaders and teams thrive. Join me as I challenge the old ways of leadership and inspire a new approach that fosters growth, trust, and connection. Key Takeaways: Leading From Fear - It is a common trap many of us fall into, where decisions and actions are driven by the need to avoid something or the fear of not achieving a desired outcome. The Dangers of Leading from Avoidance - Leadership is most effective when we focus on what we want to achieve, not on avoiding what we fear. The anti-mindset reinforces what we don’t want. By shifting our focus to our goals, we break free from avoidance and lead with purpose and clarity. Leading with Fear - While decisions made in fear may feel urgent, they are not always clear or thoughtful—they’re often driven by the instinct to escape rather than move forward. Shifting from Fear to Possibility - Leading from fear isn’t sustainable. When leaders rely on fear, it leads to burnout, mistakes, and missed details, as people focus on avoiding failure rather than achieving success. Fear-driven leadership drains teams and communities, creating stress instead of growth. Helpful Resources: How Leading with Possibility Creates Stronger Teams - When leadership comes from a place of possibility and empowerment, it inspires those you lead. Leading from fear limits potential, but leading from possibility opens the door to greater collaboration, empowerment, and success. Creating Psychological Safety in Healthcare - The shift toward emotional intelligence in healthcare leadership is not just important but overdue. As the industry continues to evolve, focusing on trust and psychological safety will lead to healthier work environments, better communication, and improved patient care. Notable Highlights: "When we lead from fear, we’re focused on what we don’t want, then we are operating in a more in a higher stress state." "Leading from fear keeps you focused on the thing that you don’t want." "Leading from fear makes you focus on what you’re trying to avoid, not what you’re trying to accomplish." "If you’re continuing to operate from fear, it is not sustainable because we are eventually going to burn out." "Leading with fear doesn’t work because it interrupts our ability to think clearly and actually see the bigger picture." "When you lead from fear and with fear, you burn your teams out." "When you lead with possibility, you empower your teams and your leaders and your employees with what’s possible." Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode with Robert Dilts, we explore the art of listening at multiple levels and how it impacts our communication, leadership, and relationships. We discuss how listening goes beyond hearing content and includes tuning into tone, body language, and emotional subtext. The conversation highlights the importance of emotional intelligence in communication, offering strategies for leaders, parents, and anyone looking to connect on a deeper level. Tune in to learn how listening can heal, connect, and transform. Key Takeaways: The Levels of Listening -Deeper listening goes beyond words to understanding patterns, emotions, and beliefs. It’s about hearing with both the heart and gut, allowing the message to truly connect and move us. Understanding the Message Behind the Tone - True listening goes beyond words. It’s about understanding the emotions and needs behind them. By paying attention to tone and subtext, we connect with the deeper meaning of what’s being said. Listening From Different Parts of Yourself - We all have different sides that affect how we listen. Being aware of which side is active helps us understand our reactions and improve conversations. Recognizing this shift brings balance and deeper insights, making our communication better and more meaningful. Presence in Listening - One of our deepest needs is to be heard, yet in wanting to be heard, we often close ourselves off to listening. When we bring our full presence to a conversation, it allows others to feel heard and fosters more meaningful communication. Connection Before Listening - True connection and suffering rarely coexist—when we connect with others, it opens space for deeper, empathetic listening. By allowing what we hear to touch us, we create a human-to-human connection that goes beyond content, transcending filters and biases. About Robert Dilts Robert Dilts is an internationally recognized leader in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and co-founder of the Dilts Strategy Group. Since the 1970s, he has been a pioneering consultant and trainer, working globally with top organizations to advance leadership, communication, and team development. Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode of Behind Beliefs, Behaviors, and the Brain, we kick off season 2 by exploring how to move forward in the unknown. We'll reflect on the fear and doubt that often come with uncertainty and share how shifting our perspective can turn the unknown into an opportunity for growth and empowerment. Tune in for an inspiring message to start the year with clarity, intention, and confidence. Share this episode with those who could use a boost as we embrace the unknown in 2025. Key Takeaways: Facing the Unknown - We are living in a time filled with uncertainty, and the unknown can feel overwhelming. However, the truth is that the unknown is neutral—it carries no meaning except the one we assign to it. Instead of letting fear define our response, we can choose to see the unknown as an opportunity for growth. Overcoming fear of the Unknown - In moments of chaos and uncertainty, we can choose to let fear take over or adapt, lean on our support systems, and trust in our ability to navigate the unknown. While unsettling, the unknown offers opportunities for growth, connection, and grace as we adjust to life's unpredictability. How to Empower Yourself in the Unknown - In the face of the unknown, instead of being paralyzed by fear, we can choose to ask the right questions—questions that move us from a place of helplessness to a place of empowerment. The unknown doesn’t have to be a source of dread; when we approach it as an opportunity to create, it becomes a canvas for the life we are capable of building. Embracing the Unknown in 2025 - As we enter 2025, we face uncertainty and things beyond our control. However, we can shift our perspective by focusing on what we can control—our empowerment, community, and values. While we can't control everything, we can choose where to direct our energy and find power in the unknown. Notable Highlights: "When we only look at the unknown from a place of fear, we miss the opportunity to see it from a place of power and creation and even beauty." "The unknown is neither good nor bad. It's how we choose to view it that determines its impact." "When we can recognize the fear for what it is—an emotion—we can also start to look at how else we can see the unknown other than something to be feared." "We can have our power, we can move in faith, we can find possibility and beauty inside of this thing called the unknown." "Find the power and the beauty in the unknown, and hold that as you move forward in the days ahead." "Every day is unknown. Every week is unknown. Every month is unknown. We wake up each day, knowing what we know, but moving through the unknown every single day." Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and The Brain: Your Communication Podcast
In this episode, I explore the power of self-examination and how it leads to meaningful change, both individually and collectively. Drawing on Buddha's wisdom, I discuss how our thoughts shape our reality and how shifting our mental models can transform behaviors and environments. I also explore how trauma, fear, and beliefs drive actions, and how expanding our identities can positively impact leadership and relationships. Tune in as we reflect on the importance of self-reflection and community as we step into a new season of growth and opportunity. Key Takeaways: The Power of Thought in Shaping Our Reality - Change begins in the mind. Our thoughts shape both our personal lives and society as a whole. Where we stand today reflects the collective power of shared beliefs and ideas. Moving Forward Through Thought and Self-Examination - True progress starts within and extends outward. As we navigate the challenges of a divided and complex world, moving forward requires both self-reflection and collective thought. While fear, anger, and grief dominate for many, the path forward begins with individual self-examination. Transforming Outcomes by Examining Mental Models - Systems and environments are shaped by our beliefs and constrained by how we see ourselves and our purpose. True transformation begins with self-examination, challenging the mental frameworks that define who we are and how we operate. Only then can we reshape both the systems we build and the results we achieve. Helpful Resources: Balancing Individualism and Collective Growth - True collaboration balances individuality with shared purpose. It's not about groupthink but about aligning freedom and connection, fostering partnerships that benefit all. To create lasting change, we must confront the fears and traumas—personal, familial, and generational—that shape our beliefs and behaviors. Expanding Leadership Beyond Rigid Identities - Viewing a CEO role as authoritarian limits how we interact with others. But when we broaden what leadership means, we create more meaningful, compassionate connections with employees, colleagues, and clients. When leadership focuses on a higher purpose, not just profits, it becomes more flexible and impactful. Notable Highlights: "All that we are is a result of all that we have thought." "When we look at meaningful change, we have to go below the surface." "The systems must change, but our environment is limited by our beliefs." "Our identity is limited and contained by what we see our higher purpose or the bigger picture to be." "Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts." "We will need each other, we will need community."
