Support the show In this episode, Kristina and Mary talked all things career progression as two industry sisters who support each other from a distance. Mary's work in the UK is aligned with the work Kristina does here in the US and the gems dropped in this episode help individuals at all stages of their career. Check out the full episode! HIGHLIGHTS: Mary Mosope Adeyemi is a passionate, people-oriented, and purpose-driven woman who successfully walks the tightrope of business and social pursuits. She is an award-winning investment professional with a long tenure working with global investment banks. Alongside her functional role, Mary has spent thousands of hours developing, executing, and managing talent recruitment and training programs, focusing on early career professionals. This passion for personal development and equitable career growth led her to found her social-first organization, viSHEbility, and write her debut book: Visible Strengths. In this episode, you will learn the following: How to combine multiple passions into one career Why we need a variety of mentors and sponsors who may look and sound very different from us The key steps to realizing the beauty of “career joy” QUOTABLES: “Mentors can look and sound very different. They don't have to always look like you. If they do, great, and you're able to get something out of them...fantastic. If they don't, that's okay, too. The fact is that as human beings we're more alike than we think actually and so the moment you can give space for people to contribute to your life and be open to receiving that then the more sort of places you can connect. I fundamentally believe in humanity and that people are constantly probably more looking for how to help rather than how to hurt.” “Unfortunately, we’ve turned forming relationships (or networking) as a transaction, but it’s about finding points of connection. “Finding career joy really is being in a place where you’re using what’s most natural to you to drive forward the agenda of your organization to contribute value in a way that is super tangible. But also to do that in a way that you are growing yourself and you’re also achieving your own goals.” “Many of us are constantly living out somebody else’s life, unfortunately.” MARY’S MAJOR KEY: “Self-Awareness! Just know yourself and to thyself, be true.” Who are you and how are you going to show up as your full self at home and at work? In this episode, Kristina sits down with Sabrina Walker Hernandez, a certified consultant, coach, facilitator, & bestselling author who helps nonprofits and small businesses build relationships that increase revenue. She shares the good, the bad, and the not-so-pleasant path to her success. She was strategic in her planning process as a mom and spouse with a defined window of time to complete her education. Check out the full episode for more! "In anything in life, building relationships is the key." - Sabrina Walker Hernandez HIGHLIGHTS: Career Goals: As a child, Sabrina fell in line with what her family wanted her to be which was an attorney. It wasn't until her internship in her senior year that she discovered her interest in the nonprofit space. Family Support: Her parents had a limited education background and they were devastated when she told them she wasn't going to law school. She explained her detailed plans to them and they shifted to supporting her goals...even though they weren't quite clear on what lied ahead for her. Military Career: Sabrina shared her story about "running away from home" and joining the US Army, which eventually covered the full cost of her education - undergrad and grad school. Education Journey: She earned college credit instead of monetary compensation for her internship. It exposed her to the legal community. Her advice to college students: take an internship to build your network, clarify your career path, and learn critical soft skills. It's not just about the degree. Mentorship: As she grew up, she was exposed to those in the military...not necessarily those who went to college. She naturally followed that path of those informal mentors in her community. Her first boss mentored her and it had a huge impact in her success. Sabrina mentors one person per year. FYI - be sure to listen to the entire episode to hear more about her application process. Beyond mentoring professionals, Sabrina works with local students in a program known as VAMOS. Learn more about it here . SABRINA'S MAJOR KEY: Build relationships with your college classmates. The network is critical. Who is the student next to you and who is in their network? Every opportunity is a networking opportunity. SHOW NOTES Internship •If you're interested in nursing, get your CNA certification, get a job working in a nursing home or assisted living home health care, and get your feet wet. •Understand if this is something that you want to do. Too many young people go into nursing school and become nurses, only to realize they didn't want to be nurses. The difference between a CNA and other nurses •CNA stands for Certified Nursing Assistant. You are the eyes and ears of the nurse. •A lot of times, the CNA takes care of the patients and does the basic care like taking them to the bathroom, helping them bathe, helping them get dressed, and sometimes feeding someone. •The CNA's role is very critical and a lot of what the CNA does and how they document what they do can impact how a legal case comes out. •The role of the CNA is very important and it's the entryway into the healthcare field for a lot of people. •They are not responsible for the actual plan of care, but they can give input into it. But it's the registered nurse (RN) that develops a plan of care for the patient. Finding a legit CNA program •Start by finding your department of health or state board of nursing website. •Make sure that the program we're looking at is on the accredited list. •Look at how the classes are structured and the learning style. The earning potential for a CNA •This is a good time to be in healthcare because everybody's short-staffed, so they're paying more. •You can start your career as a CNA and make up to $18 an hour. Mentorship •Look for those opportunities in your community that can help you go further. •If you're thinking of being in any type of STEM fields or medical, etc. Take the hard classes, and don't be afraid to try. •Take the extra English class because a lot of what you need to do is communication, and writing. Take the science class and learn about it and also do your research. •You could always volunteer at a nursing home passing out water. One Major Key to Success •Set your intention. •Always be open to new opportunities. The Nurse Shark Academy •A formal coaching program that takes you from idea to launch with six sessions that work you through building your business plan. •If you can write a nursing care plan, you can write a business plan. •This isn't some dried-up business plan that people think of; this is a plan for your business with all the steps being put in place. •If you don't have a plan of what vision you have for your business, you're going to be easily distracted. •Other nurses can have their own businesses and let people know that nurses can be business owners as well. Why do you want to be an entrepreneur? •I Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Start for FREE Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! SUMMARY In this episode Kristina sits down with Pete Alcide, award-winning filmmaker who also has a PhD in Psychology. He walks us through his education background of earning multiple degrees while already knowing exactly what he was passionate about. Pete suggests artists who know they want to get into the entertainment industry should focus on building skills instead of degrees. Earning a Bachelor’s degree is a helpful start, but graduate programs may not be worth the money or time. Check out the episode for more! TIMESTAMPS [00:30] Guest Intro Pete Alcide is a multi-degreed filmmaker. He learned of his passion for film making while performing in a play as a child. [07:06] Pete’s Educational Journey Pete has a PhD in psychology. After switching his major a couple of times during his undergraduate studies, he settled on studying with people and their minds. This has fueled his understanding of people when writing scripts and short stories. [13:06] Finding Mentors and Industry Peers [17:49] Formal Education and Artists Gain skills, not degrees. Artists excel best when they have the opportunities to build industry relevant skills. A bachelor's degree may be helpful, but graduate programs may not add to your end goal. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. [25:17] Networking Don’t just be book smart; be open to getting your hands dirty. Creating intentional connections is the best way to build a long lasting community. [29:50] One Major Key Pete’s major key advice is “don’t stop.” Stopping and starting delays your progress–keep going.
