The ancient city of Hazor, a major power in northern Canaan, was notably significant due to its size and influence. When Joshua and the Israelites conquered Hazor, they destroyed it by fire to diminish its strategic importance. Hazor, previously under Egyptian control, was known for its Egyptian artifacts, including a sphinx and numerous statues, reflecting its central role in regional trade and power dynamics. The city's destruction, marked by intense burning and the desecration of cultic temples, occurred around 1455-1400 BC, aligning with Joshua's campaign. Despite the quick battle accounts in Joshua 11, the entire Canaan conquest took about seven years, including the subsequent defeat of the Anakim giants. Hazor’s fall symbolized the triumph of the Israelites' God over Canaanite deities, contributing significantly to the Israelites’ control of Canaan.
