Jason Zygadlo, Founder & President of Build Your Own Brand (BYOB), has always had that inner something that made him think outside the box and do things a little differently. That is to say, he has a way of getting the right attention. As a matter of fact, he’s built a business by showing people how to think different, be different, and show off just a little bit. His secret, find that gritty, creative, memorable way to get noticed.
I’ll leave the story of how he got hired into pharmaceutical sales and then into medical device sales up to him; you can check it out in the interview. What you need to know is how he sets himself apart from other career coaches and placement firms. Because that is not what he does . . . he helps you be memorable. There is work to be done to make that happen, but it is simple:
Prepare + Be Different + Stand Out + Validate = Memorable
Jason is a firm believer in preparing for the role you want by investigating the role. Get to know people that do that role, talk to them about the highs & lows of the position. Get to know what lessons you can get to know and how to avoid the pitfalls. Network with as many people as you can. Learn. Ask questions. And, build your own portfolio, or package, that will have you ready to hold any conversation and showcase what you’ve done to be there.
Being different is important. But don’t be weird. Showcase to others what it is you bring to the table that others just simply cannot provide. You know you are different because you’ve done your research. Build relationships with people you want to work with. Let them get to know you and what value you bring. Be different than E V E R Y O T H E R candidate they will see.
Stand Out. Be bold. What can you do to be notice in the most positive way? What is it about you that other people need to get to know? Be willing to do things others are not or have not thought of doing.
Validate yourself. As Jason says, bring receipts to validate what you’ve done. Don’t be afraid to show off your awards. Make sure to highlight your successes and accomplishments. Bring a portfolio filled with receipts of what you paid for over the years.
Your ability to get people to get to know you, trust you, and like you are the very foundation of any salesperson’s arsenal in getting a relationship with a client. You should do that with the company you want to work with too! Jason wants you to get the job not because you are in the “good pile” of resumes, but because you are genuine, authentic, and yourself. Companies want to hire people they can believe in, teammates they can see doing the job successfully. Showcase that to any future employer and the opportunities open for you.
