Many young adults grapple with the decision to either pursue undergraduate education or enter a branch of the U.S. military. Why choose when doing both can pay off in so many different and meaningful ways? Amy and Mike invited college counselor Phil Black to explore answers to the question, “Is ROTC for you?”

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. What is ROTC and why is it getting so popular?

  2. What type of students should consider ROTC?

  3. Does an ROTC commitment improve admissions outcomes?

  4. How much money do ROTC scholarships offer?

  5. What’s the commitment like as an ROTC student during and after college?

MEET OUR GUEST

Phil Black is the creator of PrepWell Academy and ServeWell Academy, an unconventional approach to preparing high school students (and their parents) for the rigors of the college admissions process. His unique program is delivered online and focuses on the early preparation of students (freshman and sophomore year) interested in attending highly-selective colleges (e.g. Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, etc.), military service academies (e.g. Naval Academy, West Point, etc.), and those seeking athletic or ROTC scholarships.

Over the years, Phil has built a record of unique accomplishments including: Division I college athlete, Navy SEAL Officer, Goldman Sachs Investment Banker, bootstrap entrepreneur, 2X Shark Tank contestant, firefighter, husband and father of four sons. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Phil has previously appeared on this podcast in episode 162 High School Course Selection and Academic Rigor and for an IEC profile in episode 261 IEC PROFILE: Phil Black.
