Hosts Rob Fullmer and Andrew Bauman dive into the current state of the Arizona beer world. They start with personal updates on travel, touching on the high costs of add-ons like carry-on bags and Airbnb cleaning fees . The conversation shifts to industry regulations, discussing a situation in Kansas where long-unenforced minimum production requirements might force breweries to close . This contrasts with a major legislative win in Arizona: the passage of Bill 2905, which significantly lowers the minimum production requirement for breweries from 5,000 gallons to 1,000 gallons . This change is seen as crucial for smaller and newer breweries, potentially enabling more diverse business models like those of the newly opened Fort Mojave Brewing and Retrograde Brew and Barbecue . However, it wasn't all good news from the legislature. The hosts express significant frustration over the failure of the Hemp Adult Beverage Bill (1556) . Compounded by a recent edict from the Arizona Attorney General demanding the removal of hemp-derived THC beverages from shelves by late April under threat of severe penalties , they discuss the potential negative impact on businesses, the challenges for license holders dealing with patrons consuming unregulated products, and the missed opportunities for regulation and revenue . The episode also covers recent brewery news, including the sad closures of Beer Research Institute (BRI) and Taproom 120 . They reflect on the general challenges facing breweries, such as rising rents, slim margins, and intense shelf competition . Looking ahead, Rob and Andrew preview the upcoming Baja Beer Festival in Tucson, highlighting the wide array of breweries attending, interactive elements, and associated events like the Meet the Brewers night at Dragoon Brewing. They also briefly touch on the upcoming Craft Brewers Conference in Indianapolis . BAJABEERFEST.COM APRIL 5th, TUCSON Want to ask a question on the show? With Andrew out sick and with some important bills hitting the house, we tried an experiment. Could this blog be put together in one marathon House session? We used the assistance of AI Rob to do some of the voice-over work and while it worked out OK and might have been the right tool for the job... Well, we'd like to hear your thoughts. Also, there might be some literal blind spots on the audio so maybe check us out on YouTube. It was a real challenge to do this all in real-time, keep batteries charged and try to engage legislators as a solo act. Despite all of that, I'm glad we rolled out this experiment. Rob Fullmer, the director of government affairs for the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, and Andrew Bauman, the executive director, discuss recent news and events in the Arizona craft brewing industry. They begin by discussing the recent end to a 158-day drought in Phoenix, noting the importance of rain and snow for the state's agriculture and breweries. The conversation then turns to the Arizona legislature, which has recently begun its session. Rob mentions a bill that would allow golfers to bring their own beer to golf courses, which he finds interesting because it is outside of the areas that the legislators normally focus on. They then discuss the upcoming Arizona Strong Beer Fest, which will feature over 70 breweries from Arizona. They talk about the challenges of coordinating a program across so many breweries and the changes in social media algorithms that have made it more difficult to reach people. Andrew mentions that he recently attended a board meeting where the main topic of conversation was promoting the Arizona Strong Beer Fest. He says that there were some good ideas discussed and that he hopes to see more social media posts about the event. Rob talks about his recent visit to the Capitol, where he had to sit in on a committee meeting about amending the advertisement of THC products. He says that the unintended consequences of the bill could be overly broad and that he is concerned about how it could affect the alcohol industry. They end the podcast by talking about Bob Uecker.
