S03E08 (#336). Based on feedback from his booked UX for beginners, Joel Marsh has produced UX for business. A comprehensive guide for designers navigating real-world challenges. We talk to him about his own journey from design principles to practical business applications. We chat about Joel’s VDP methodology: Value, Diagnosis, and Probability, emphasizing the importance of understanding user needs and business goals. Joel stresses the need for designers to communicate effectively with stakeholders, and we look at some of the topics in Joel’s book in more detail. “We we tend to imagine that other people should come to our design world, even though, ironically, the job of, you know, The UX people is to understand other people’s worlds and for us to go there.” – Joel Marsh (Listening time: 44 minutes) References: Full transcript for this episode (coming soon) Joel Marsh Website: https://www.joelmarsh.com/ Company: https://peekerton.com/ Book: UX for business (O’Reilly) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joelmarshx/ Recommended listening Episode 247: Civic tech with Cyd Harrell Sign up to our newsletter – Show notes to your inbox, plus extra stories, news and offers Support UX Podcast – Contribute with your time as a volunteer, or make a small financial contribution to help keep the podcast running The post UX for business with Joel Marsh appeared first on UX Podcast .…

S03E07 (#335). Lou Downe, author of Good Services and former director of design for the UK government joins us in this episode. We sat down with Lou and asked—Where is service design going wrong, and are we even doing service design? Among the topics we discussed were: The complexity of modern services and the complete reliance on infrastructure, as well as the importance of service literacy for leaders. “Sometimes it’s the first time that [managers] have seen or experienced the service that they’re providing. It’s a bit like a chef basically cooking a meal having never tasted it.” – Lou Downe (Listening time: 41 minutes) References: Full transcript for this episode (coming soon) Lou Downe Website: https://loudowne.com/ Company: https://good.services/ Book: Good services – How to design services that work LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lou-downe-757a83b/ Bad services: Why services fail and what we can do to make them work (Lou’s talk at FBTB 2024) Why we need service literacy now (blog post by Lou) We need to rewild the internet Recommended listening Episode 193: Designing democracy with Dana Chisnell From Business To Buttons Covert art image credit: AFRY Experience Studios Sign up to our newsletter – Show notes to your inbox, plus extra stories, news and offers Support UX Podcast – Contribute with your time as a volunteer, or make a small financial contribution to help keep the podcast running The post Service literacy with Lou Downe appeared first on UX Podcast .…

S03E06 (#334). Aarathi Krishnan is an international aid expert, specialising in humanitarian futures and strategic foresight. In a world where the sets of rules that have governed us as humanity are rapidly changing, how will we know if the solutions that we are designing now are going to be fit for purpose? Aarathi pushes the importance of accountability, guardrails, and awareness in our decision-making, as well as highlighting the need for organizations to explore potential harms. We discuss how it’s possible to have multiple truths, and the historical context of biases. “ The global social contract that we grew up with has been thrown out of the door ” – Aarathi Kristnan (Listening time: 40 minutes) References: Full transcript for this episode (coming soon) Aarathi Kristnan Website: https://www.rak-sha.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aarathikrishnan Defending from evil in “tech for good” (Aarathi’s talk at FBTB 2024) Aadhaar – Indian indentification system (Wikipedia) Caste system in India (Wikipedia) The Satellite Sentinel project Aarathi’s LinkedIn update Recommended listening: Episode 263: Creating a better society with Don Norman (Part 1) From Business To Buttons Covert art image credit: AFRY Experience Studios Sign up to our newsletter – Show notes to your inbox, plus extra stories, news and offers Support UX Podcast – Contribute with your time as a volunteer, or make a small financial contribution to help keep the podcast running The post Defending against evil with Aarathi Krishnan appeared first on UX Podcast .…
S03E05 (#333). A linkshow. James and Per discuss two articles they’ve stumbled on. This time we feature articles about things that slow down your website’s experience and why you can’t do anything about it plus the concept of “failing early” but not in a “failing fast” startup way. Article one is Six things that slow down your site’s UX (and why you have no control over them) by Tammy Everts. “You have a lot of control over the design and code for the pages on your site, plus a decent amount of control over the first and middle mile of the network your pages travel over. But when it comes to the last mile – or more specifically, the last few feet – matters are no longer in your hands” Article two is Fail early: the hidden design principle behind great UX by Niaw de Leon. “In a way, failing early is an extension of the UX heuristic visibility of system status, which advises us to “present feedback to the user as quickly as possible” in order to create trust through predictable interactions.” (Listening time: 42 minutes, transcript ) References: Full transcript for this episode Article 1: Six things that slow down your site’s UX (and why you have no control over them) by Tammy Everts Website: https://tammyeverts.wordpress.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tammyeverts/ Network information API demo by James Article 2: Fail early: the hidden design principle behind great UX by Niaw de Leon Website: https://niawdeleon.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniwd/ Swedish online pharmacy Apotea Sign up to our newsletter – Show notes to your inbox, plus extra stories, news and offers Support UX Podcast – Contribute with your time as a volunteer, or make a small financial contribution to help keep the podcast running The post Fail early appeared first on UX Podcast .…
