“And these words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk to them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and write them on the doorpost of your house.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-8) According to God's Word God wants parents to be the primary disciple maker for their children. How do parents learn to disciple their children? How should congregations and leaders support parents in this important work? Today on Family Shield we’ll talk about how parents can be supported by the congregation to raise their children to know and love Jesus. My guests today are Rev. Our young adults are the most vulnerable Christians because the world has so much access to them but they do not yet have enough experience to recognize harmful influences. To help them walk well with God, Rev. Dr. Mark Kiessling joins us for this conversation and how we can lead or be part of effective ministry to the Youth under our care, in our congregations and in our own families. Come, join the chat for you and for the people we are called to protect and inspire.…

Because our children are so precious to us, we want to tell them everything we know, but that can easily overwhelm them. We asked Laura Arndt to join us again to help us share the “words of eternal life” with our littles so that God’s Word can be treasure for them as well. This is all about enjoying God together with elementary age children for parents, grandparents, teachers, Sunday School teachers, and all who serve our younger sisters and brothers in Christ. Come, join the chat for you and for the people we are called to protect and inspire.…
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, so taking care of these temples is part of our worship of God, especially as the people around us are better off if we are healthy, energized, and engaged. We also need to model healthy behaviors for the little people entrusted to our care. With this conversation, Dr. Robert Lufkin shares healthy nutritional strategies and a dozen diseases we can avoid or make much less likely for us to suffer. Come, join the chat for you and for the people we are called to protect and inspire.…

How do you talk to people that are much younger than you, that are facing a world much different than you, but take eternal truths and put it on their level? It's so easy to talk over the heads of our smallest of brothers and sisters, the smallest of people live and are entrusted to our care. So by the end of this short conversation you are going to have a lot more ability to take the phenomenal truths that God has breathed into you, to breathe that into the smallest of people entrusted to our care. Welcome to Family Shield Ministries. I’m Mark Femmel, a pastor in St. Louis. And today we get to chat with childhood education expert extraordinaire, Laura Langhoff Arndt.…
What would it be like to just die right now? A lot of people would be terrified. A lot of people are just not ready–too much to do, and it's scary, we haven't been there before. But some have and they have a wonderful story to share. So today we have a blessing and an opportunity to have an incredible conversation with a pastor named John Burke, who if you have not already heard anything about him you are going to love him and love his work because he started out not knowing the answers and God has graciously allowed him not just to be hungry for what's coming next, but how amazing it is. He's sharing his story. We are Family Shield Ministries. I am Mark Femmel and with me today is John Burke, author of Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You.…

After being in broadcast ministry for about 40 years, Kay Meyer is about to take a step back, and we know what that means--she's gonna find something else to do. "I'm waiting on the Lord to open doors," answered Kay. That's right. But after 40 years, she has had an amazing track record with all sorts of guests and all sorts of topics and all sorts of opportunities that the Lord has opened up. So this is our part three of a showcase of Kay Meyer, the founder and minister behind and under Family Shield Ministries. She has washed our feet through broadcasting and ministry for 40 years, and that includes you, our listeners, and me, a podcast host, and Mark Frith, who's also a pastor and in the house to help us showcase the tremendous impact and to do the highlight reel of Kay Meyer's ministry, throughout all the ways God has blessed her to use her voice to speak His Word. So it's weird for me to say this as I'm looking at Kay Meyer, but welcome to Family Shield Ministries.…

Family Shield Ministries is based on Ephesians 6 – the shield of faith, not just for us but in ancient times sometimes shields are so big that they would interlock with the shield of the person next to you or it’s a big shield where he could protect not just yourself but like God, the mighty fortress. And so Family Shield Ministries from the very beginning and all along the way, has been about shielding the family under your care as God shields all of us, including your people, as a part of his family. So welcome to Family Shield Ministries. Today we are on part 2 of a special series with Kay Meyer and Rev. Mark Frith, who are both here with us on the microphone and we are looking at the impact that Family Shield Ministries has had. We're going to give a little bit behind the scenes look from Family Shield Ministries to share with everybody who it is, why it's going, and why it needs to continue. So in studio is Kay Meyer. If you are a follower of Family Shield Ministries she is no stranger to you. I would encourage you to go listen to Part 1 to hear the back story of Kay Meyer. But today it is about you, our listener, and the impacts that Family Shield Ministries is making.…

Right now it is so easy to just get in your car in the garage, open the door, drive out, go about your life in your own cubicle, in your own little lane, and your own office, and then drive, home park in your garage, put the garage door down, and then then you just go inside and take care of your own family. But today we have an incredible opportunity to spend some time with somebody who refused to park in the garage and just keep her nose to herself and just keep her nose out of everybody else’s business. We have the gift of a woman who got involved in everybody's family, everybody's family business to bring them to be much more of a part of the family of God; not just to be themselves but to be in partnership. So today I have the incredible blessing to share a microphone with Mark Frith, who's also in studio, and the famous, the sacred, the precious Kay Meyer.…
Welcome back to Family Shield Ministries listeners. It is a privilege and a delight to have a little bit of your time today. My name is Mark Femmel, Pastor here in St Louis and with Family Shield Ministries. I came across a book by somebody that I'm very excited to share with you today–Sheri Mueller. She is an incredible blessing because she put a book that addresses the pain that 30% of wives are silently struggling with. 30% of wives are critically unhappy in their relationship in their marriage because of the one thing we're going to talk about. Now that doesn't just mean the wives are upset; there are a lot of guys I don't have this decision for that; Sheri might. But a lot of guys are also unhappy with this. So this is an opportunity for guys, for gals, husbands and wives, to be able to figure out how to itch the itch they cannot seem to reach, and it’s so easy. Sheri makes it so easy. She gives us an action plan. So by the end of this conversation which is only 27 minutes right now, you’re going to have the ability to balance your life better, and have the ability to bring words into the lives of those around you and do life better. And I gotta say, this is one of those adult conversations.…

Welcome back Family Shield Ministries folks with this Part 2 conversation with a precious part of the church, Julianna Schults. She is part of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Youth Ministry Department, and she is sharing her time with us about a book that she has just put together with a coworker of hers, Doctor Mark Kiesling. The reason why we're doing this is most congregations have a problem and that problem is your kids don't wanna come back. Your kids don't wanna come back because it's irrelevant, it's disconnected. And so we are excited to share this book with you, Seven Practices of Healthy Youth Ministry. And we brought on one of the authors, Julianna Schults, as I mentioned and if you missed Part 1 of the conversation, she shared her absolute favorite out of the seven practices and it was a great conversation. Now you might be wondering, why did I come back? We already got the best one out of the way! Because there are six more so welcome back Julianna.…

Welcome back lovely listeners to Family Shield Ministries podcast and radio show. This is Mark Femmel, the pastor in St Louis and cohost. I'm excited to have this conversation because almost every church I have ever met has a problem-a youth problem, and that is, when we just kind of do business as normal, our kids grow up and graduate from the faith. Sometimes that's right there at confirmation. Sometimes that's when they graduate high school and go off to college and we never see them again. And today we have a person who is a specialist-well trained, well educated, and well experienced. Juliana Schultz from Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Youth Ministry. There's a whole department to help us figure out how to do this better, and she has got the skillz, and that's with a z at the end as the kids say.…

Welcome back to Family Shield Ministries folks. I’m Mark Femmel, pastor in St Louis, and with Family Feud Ministries. I got an exciting opportunity. I got an opportunity to get my hands on a book by Dennis Allen called The Disciple Dilemma, and it is the answer to prayers and all the things that the church can do better; it's something that I've been struggling with. Can Christians thrive just showing up for church on Sunday morning; just an hour on Sunday morning? We’ve been doing it a long time, and we’re still here. So it must not be broke, so let’s not fix it. Today the reason why I’m excited about this is Dennis Allen is going to talk to us about what if it were more than just one hour on Sunday? What would the church be, and more importantly, what would your family be if they had more than just an hour on Sunday morning, together or separate, however your church is doing it. It’s that and more. I’d hate for your family, I’d hate for you, or the people depending on you to miss out on more when it’s actually better.…
My name is Mark Femmel in St. Louis and I am blessed to have a conversation with somebody who has written the book that I wish I could give to myself as a kid. This is from Concordia publishing house and it is a journey through church history. Christa Petzold has written this book and is a tremendous gift of just short bedtime stories, or reading it in the car stories. It really showcases the people who have come before us that have handed down the faith to us telling us and raising us in the faith to say, that Bible, the word that it says, it changes everything. And she also even goes into sort of the history of our our worship service. So if you've ever wondered why we are the way we are, where we got it, and how it got here, Christa’s book is just the answer to all that. Plus, it's fun to read. And it's designed for little kiddos, so if you are a five year old or a 50 year old, this book is gonna keep you engaged and make you a lot hungrier for um, just the treasures that people have laid down before.…
Welcome to all of our listeners to Family Shield Ministries. My name is Mark Femmel and I'm a pastor and I'm co-host of Family Shield Ministries. The big question we have today is how can you have the right words to help people, not hurt more? Sometimes at funerals and terrible tragedies or events or something that's bad news has just happened, and we say the worst things. So today with us is Faith Doerr, and she is here to be an incredible blessing, to help us say what we really wanna say, because as Christians, we have not just gold, we have platinum to lay before people, and honestly, we often settle for the copper and the tin of the world of these cliches that just make our pain worse. And so we say the worst things, and it sucks any sort of help that we can be out of a person. And so faith is gonna help us fix all of that. Faith, welcome to Family Shield Ministries.…
Hello Family Shield Ministries folks. This is Mark Femmel coming to you with a very unique book, The Men We Need. it's a very unique book because often times the church is for women, and women feel at home in the church, and women often times have a major struggle to bring their guys to church, and if you’ve got a guy like that in your life, or maybe your guy who doesn't see the joy of walking With Jesus, and the power and the triumph of walking with Jesus, or maybe you don’t feel like the kind of man that everybody can look up to, oh my goodness, the church is for you. This book is for you. And the person that we are going to have a conversation with today, Brant Hansen, is the guy that you need to listen to.…

As parents it's very easy to get caught in the rut of trying to do everything–getting the kids everywhere they need to be, trying to help every kid with every homework assignment, trying to iron out every little wrinkle that your little special nugget of joy has in any chaos that they have with any parents, boyfriend, girlfriend, teacher, or even just their own body image. It is so easy to fall into the rut of doing everything all by yourself, because after all, if you loved your kids you’d do that, right? Today we have a really awesome contribution to that conversation from the world of business and leadership; and the guy who is personally responsible for my health insurance as a part of Concordia Planned Services. At the moment of Jesus' death the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. What does the tearing of the temple mean? How many days did Jesus appear to people after the resurrection? How many people saw him at one time after the resurrection? We often spend a lot of time during Lent and Easter learning about the suffering and death of Christ but how much do we know about what he did after he rose bodily from the dead? Hello and welcome to Family Shield Ministries. We are on mission to help families walk together and with each other, and of course to walk with God. I’m Pastor Mark Femmel, part of the Family Shield Ministries crew, and I am blessed to share the microphone, usually blessed by Kay Meyer. Today we have once again, a special guest David Brickner, who is the Executive Director of a pretty wonderful ministry, especially if you were listening last time, of all the wonderful doors that God is opening through the Old Testament. Executive Director of Jews for Jesus, which is an International Ministry out of San Francisco. So this episode is a promise kept, last time we were with David Brickner, and he and I were talking about all the overlap, all the distinctions, and also just how to share the Faith with your Jewish neighbor, doctor, lawyer, cousin, friend, teacher, student, and it was a great conversation in my opinion. We talked about the cultural uniqueness and layers and history of Judaism. We also talked about what that word in your New Testament, Christ, and that Old Testament word, Messiah, what that actually means.…

Hello Family Shield Ministries Network. We have a very precious opportunity to have a conversation once again with the incredible Rev. Dr. Gary Chapman. That's one of those names that if you're a minister, you know exactly who it is. If you're not in ministry, if you're not a major churchgoer or book reader, I guarantee you people have been using his stuff on you since 1992 with The Five Love Languages. And this has been a legendary book, and it's early in your ministry, early in your career, Dr. Chapman. But that is not the only pony that you have put on the field. You have just come out with an incredibly awesome book that is just even more practical in my opinion, than The Five Love Languages. Called Five Traits of a Healthy Family: Steps You Can Take to Grow Closer, Communicate Better, and Change the World Together. So this is another conversation, and I'm excited about where this is going to go. We're going to review the book, not as a replacement of the book, but just to showcase how awesome this book is. And then I've got a couple of questions that I really wanted to share with you that in my opinion, nobody else is asking you. So I want to make this as practical as possible because there's a lot of theoretical books and I appreciate how you write. My goal today is to help people avoid a shipwreck. I'm not a sailor, but I've seen a lot of movies about sailing and I talked to a lot of people in the Navy. There are a few ways to sail a ship right. And there are a lot of ways to sail a ship wrong. So Rev. Dr. Gary Chapman, thank you for being on our show today.…

Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” At some point, our lives will be shaken by suffering, heartache, or loss. When this occurs we can ask these questions: will we rely on the faith that God gives us when life's sufferings shake us to the core? Through God’s strength, and by his grace, how can we leverage those experiences to point others to a relationship with Jesus Christ? Donna Snow, a popular author and speaker, wrote a new Bible study for Lutheran Women's Missionary League entitled Unshakable: Standing on the Rock When Life Quakes Hard. This Bible study will help participants learn about the lives of eight remarkable men and women used to point others to the hope of salvation. We'll talk about a few of these people today. In each person, we’ll see how the Lord gave them faith to survive and thrive. Thankfully, the Lord gives us a kingdom that cannot be shaken. My guest is Donna Snow, author of Unshakable: Standing on the Rock When Life Quakes Hard.…

Dr Gary Chapman, author of the 5 Traits of a Healthy Family, shares. The family has been bombarded with influences ranging from the lure of bigger, better, more, to our culture’s emphasis on personal happiness above all else. Young people forming families today often lack models for healthy relationships. We all have hopes and dreams, yet it's easy to become overwhelmed and discouraged. Strong, healthy families are possible, and do exist, but they don't happen without meaningful effort. In Dr Chapman's newest book, 5 Traits of a Healthy Family, he shows us the way to a loving, stable family. With real life illustrations, he shares 5 timeless characteristics that create a flourishing family environment. These traits include families who develop an attitude of service, husband and wives who build intimate relationships, parents who guide their children, children who obey and honor their parents, and husbands and fathers who love, support, and lead. With so many distractions, real communication is getting harder. This new book is an important resource for all parents.…

Hello and welcome to Family Shield Ministries. We are both a podcast and a radio program, so it's pretty exciting. My question for you is have you ever been in that moment where you're sitting in church and the pastor does it again - he looks at you and somehow he knows you haven't been reading the Bible. And he looks at you and says, “You should really start reading the Bible. It’s the Word of Life, it’s good - the more you’re in the Word, the freer you are.” Then you do that thing where you nod but on the inside you go “But it’s so boring.” Today we have somebody who I deeply appreciate and respect, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kloha. He was at the Concordia Seminary here in St Louis when I was here and then in 2017 Dr. Kloha, you went to the Museum of the Bible.…
