In this episode I’m joined by Gene Bernier. We connected on LinkedIn about a year ago and met in person (in the river) on the Cold Plunge Truth! I remembered thinking that this guy has some wisdom to share and an authenticity to him that makes him a humble, impactful coach to leaders.
Gene leaned in with me to address where he is “misaligned” and “out of integrity” with his own message and how he serves his clients. It was an interesting experience (for both of us) to speak the truth out loud and commit to being better versions of ourselves by speaking the vulnerable, honest truth out loud.
Episode Topic
4:40 | Gene and Trevor reflect on how they connected (and jumped into a river)
8:20 | Who is Gene Bernier?
13:22 | Why asking “what do you do” is the wrong question
14:41 | Why are people “resistant” to jumping into the fog?
16:28 | Where has Gene thrown himself into the fog?
20:50 | Why don’t we ask the “hard” questions in life?
22:55 | Why are great coaches great listeners?
24:58 | Trevor speaks about Philip McKernan “holding uncomfortable space”
30:29 | Trevor and Gene talk about the power of being mindful
32:42 | What is the “magic sauce” to being an incredible coach
35:34 | How does Gene integrate his coaching into being a Dad?
42:17 | Trevor asks Gene to Speak The Truth about where he’s misaligned with his message
51:05 | Gene speaks about “braving the wilderness” in the cold river
55:30 | How finding the beauty in the storm can change your life
57:59 | What is the ONE thing that Gene is most grateful for right now?
Episode Quotes
“When I get comfortable, there is a sense of boredom. That’s why I get up at 5am to hike a mountain. Because I know I need to do those difficult things to remind myself that I’m alive and that I can overcome complacency.” - Gene Bernier

“I work with leaders that are trapped in the fog. They are really good at what they do, but when they step into a new leadership role, there is an unknown that is uncomfortable. The fog is an incredible teacher.” - Gene Bernier

“I used to ask my podcast guests - what’s the one piece of advice you’d give yourself 10 years ago. I’ve since switched it to - what’s the thing future you will say thank you to you for. It’s about looking forward to find clarity.” - Gene Bernier

“My daughter asked me if I wanted to play Exploding Kittens in the middle of my day. My initial reaction was - awe I really gotta get back to work. But I thought - NO - that’s exactly what I want to be doing right now.” - Gene Bernier
