Episode 6 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington.
In this podcast, Chuck and Danny continue the historical overview of seven critical turning points in the evolution of the US-Israel “special relationship” that they began last time.
And in this special episode, Chuck and Danny are also joined by Dennis Ross.
Dennis served as the Director of Policy Planning in the State Department under President George H.W. Bush, the special Middle East coordinator under President Bill Clinton, and was a special adviser for the Persian Gulf and Southwest Asia (which includes Iran) to the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The episode is one of a multi-part series on US-Israeli relations. Future episodes will address the relationship’s three pillars (shared values, strategic interests and the “Israel lobby”); what the “special relationship” actually encompasses, including military aid and cooperation, joint strategic consultations and planning, the US commitment to Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge, strategic diplomatic cooperation and more; what being pro-Israel means today; cases where the two sides have failed to live up to each other; and four critical questions for the future - whether the price of the relationship has been a significant loss of Israel’s independence and freedom of maneuver, whether Israel could even survive today without the US, where the relationship is heading and what can be done to preserve it for the long term.
