012: Confident English on British Television with Barbara Serra | Focus on Clarity vs. Accent
Manage episode 431210662 series 3563074
Do you know who the first non-native English speaker to host a primetime news program in British TV is?
Her name is Barbara Serra, and she was kind to join me here on The Heroic English Podcast.
Barbara was born in Italy, was raised in Denmark, and has been living in the UK for a long time where she's worked for the BBC, Sky News, Al Jazeera English and Channel 5 news.
We discuss her journey mastering English. She shares her views on why you should strive for clarity in communication over having an excessive desire to have a perfect accent.
We explore the tension between opening up and adopting a new culture and identity vs retaining one's original roots.
She's "been there, done that" which, if you don't know, is an idiom that means she's already experienced many of the situations you're currently facing as a learner trying to reach higher levels of fluency.
As you navigate your own English learning journey, Barbara's someone that you can learn a lot from.
