Chris Petti was a powerful and under-the-radar Mafia figure who operated in San Diego from the 1950s to the 1970s. Taking advantage of the city’s proximity to the Mexican border, Petti built an empire centered around drug smuggling, labor racketeering, and money laundering, while maintaining a façade as a legitimate businessman. He established strong ties with Mexican drug cartels and manipulated labor unions to control various industries in Southern California. Despite his low profile, the FBI eventually caught up with him in 1979, and he was convicted on charges of racketeering, drug trafficking, and conspiracy, resulting in a life sentence. Even after his imprisonment, Petti’s criminal influence continued to resonate, shaping San Diego’s underworld for years to come.
