EP67-BIO-GAS Renewable alternative to CNG. Compressed Bio Gas (CBG)- The Fuel of the Future- Scientists CSIR IIP
Manage episode 362074481 series 2949792
Biogas is rapidly gaining importance in India's renewable energy basket as it has a favourable CO2 footprint. Biogas is formed by biological transformation of large variety of organic wastes. It primarily consists of Methane (CH4) : (55-65%) ; Carbon Dioxide (CO2) : (35-45%) ; Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) : (0-3%); Moisture (Saturated). Biogas offers multi-prolonged benefits to society like- 1. Extraction of value from waste. 2. Reduction of imported fossil fuel 3. Safe and responsible disposal of bio-waste 4. Suitable for distribution as well as industrial scale production 5. Can tackle variety of municipal and industrial waste 6. Employment Generation. However, the biogas needs to be up-graded (purified) to remove undesired components like CO2, H2S and moisture in order to- 1. Enhance the calorific value of biogas to natural gas equivalent. 2. To avoid corrosion in pipeline/burners/engines handling the biogas 3. To make it suitable to be used as Compressed Biogas (CBG) which is hailed as an alternative vehicular fuel of the future or as PNG equivalent fuel for domestic and industrial use. Through Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme Government of India has envisioned establishment of 5000 CBG plants by 2023. CSIR IIP, Dehradun has developed a Vacuum Swing Adsorption Process for the up-gradation of raw biogas to pipe-line quality bio-methane. ft.
