Manage episode 427436974 series 3283641
Our close friend, legendary musician and best-selling author of over 40 books, Kinky Friedman, died June 27. This is a tribute to Kinky we did on our radio show. Our guests were his niece Amanda Friedman and his documentary video biographer Simone DeVries. Be sure to watch her video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0CB_K34Vlo
You can find Kinky's music and books on most websites where they are sold. Here is one: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=kinky+friedman
The Kinkster toured with Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and many others with his band, "Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys." Among Kinky's many endearing qualities, he loved to demolish "politically correct/woke" thinking.
Kinky had a terrifically dry sense of humor, so Alison and I were a perfect match for him, lobbing one-liners at each other while we (well, mostly me) smoked his Cuban cigars, which he was so generous to share.
He was especially fond of Alison (of course!. He even made up a silly song about her, which you will hear at the end of the audio.
Bill Clinton is a huge fan of Kinky's music and his books, and he invited him to an overnight stay at the White House. That evening Kinky offered a Cuban cigar to him, but Clinton demurred, saying he could not accept it because of the embargo. Kinky said, "Mr. President, this cigar is not helping their economy. It is burning their fields."
Kinky loved writing books and writing and performing music. But even more than that, he loved his Echo Hill Camp for Gold Star Children. Please visit the website and consider helping: https://echohill.org/
Alison and I just thought you would like to know about our friend, and maybe read some of his books and listen to his music, in his honor. We promise, you won't forget them!
