Like many in other professional fields, theologians love acronyms. Since the Synod of Dort, Calvinists have adopted a particular acronym relating to their core beliefs. TULIP is the name indicating total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistable grace, and perseverance of the saints. However, many theologians have observed that the core doctrines contained in TULIP do not mesh well with truths found in God's Word. Some have even indicated that TULIP may not be completely true to Calvin himself. (Note: the TULIP acronym was not adopted by Calvin, but by his followers.) Many, including Kenneth Keathley, professor of systematic theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, prefer the acronym ROSES. ROSES stands for radical depravity, overcoming grace, sovereign election, eternal life, and singular redemption. In many ways, ROSES is a superior system to TULIP. We'll explain why in today's podcast. Be sure to call in to join the conversation by calling (323) 784-9617 to speak with Pastor Brian Chilton.
