What exactly is trash art? This question has been on our minds for a while and that's why we have invited two honourable artists to our show: Eric Rhodes (@ericprhodes on Twitter) and Drea Jay (@EmpressTrash on Twitter). In this episode, these two advocates of decentralised art share their passionate views on what (trash) art is and how each of them got into the NFT space. Eric is a designer who became an award-winning artist that pioneered two crypto-native art movements. His art practice spans three areas of exploration: digital paintings exploring mental health themes, conceptual artwork around remix culture and art law, and experiments with AI and Web3 tech. He is also the host of the NFT podcast, The Outer Realm. Prior to Web3, Eric was a customer experience and service design expert leading programs at Twitter and Google. Empress Trash (Drea Jay) is a multi versatile visual artist & nomad with her rottweiler Glitch. A lifelong artist, she earned her BFA in Painting, Drawing, and Animation/Design from the University of Iowa in 2014. Shortly after, she moved to the Bay Area which she assisted and worked alongside a multitude of local and international artists and shows including Ai Wei Wei’s show on Alcatraz, being a member of the Firehouse Art Collective run by Tom Franco, and running her own underground shows from her house. She started in crypto art in 2021 and since has been exhibited internationally including Paris, Palm Springs, Miami Art Basel, NYC, LA, SXSW and Ted Talks Conference in Vancouver. CHAPTERS 0:00 - Space #29 - What is Trash Art with Eric Rhodes and Drea Jay 01:04 - Intro of Angels' Wing Gallery 04:14 - Eric shares his discovery of NFT art 05:45 - How Trash Art began 08:10 - What it means to be decentralized as an artist in a decentralised space 09:35 - What is the draw about Trash Art 10:45 - Background of the "anti-art" movement and precursor to Trash Art 12:10 - Trash Art as a reflection of today's times 13:31 - Debate about what Trash Art symbolises and what it means to represent the movement 17:42 - Value of art and what defines it 18:02 - Empress Trash introduces herself and her view of the movement 32:38 - The collection that is close to Eric's heart 33:14 - Debate about being banned by platforms and why it is problematic 34:35 - How art helps artist on a personal level 40:53 - Closing comments on art for ourselves LINKS Eric P.
