We Are Like Salt And Light
Matthew 5:13-16
(13) “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
(14) “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
The world has taken this profound teaching and created the greatest compliment of someone who is of solid worth and usefulness … “People like that are the salt of earth.” Maybe you’ve heard this?
In the Roman world, salt was believed to be the purest of all things because it came from the purest of all things…the sun and the sea. Useful of all things because it preserves things like meat. It is prized because its seasoning lends flavor to almost all foods. It was a huge benefit to keep an oven hot. Salt wasn’t just a condiment and seasoning, it was a big part of everyday life.
