The first retail stores open in ancient Greece in 800 b.c....although Le Bon Marché in Paris claims to be the first modern department store as we know them today...it opened in 1852...but Lord & Taylor opened in NYC in 1826. Department stores are commercial retail establishments that sell to customers directly. Unlike normal retail outlets a department store will have separate sections or departments dedicated to fashion, furniture, appliances, foodstuffs, and so on. and before online shopping...these stores fueled and supported the American economy. you can watch documentaries like: scatter my ashes at bergdorf's or Secrets of Selfridges.
