Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I’m your host, Andrew McGivern for November 21st.
Now, did you know today is Use Less Stuff Day? It’s a day that gently nudges us to rethink our habits, declutter our lives, and consider whether we really need another “just in case” kitchen gadget. You know the one I mean—it’s been in your drawer for three years and has never touched a vegetable.
But it slices, it dices, it even Juliennes (whatever that is).
To honor today’s theme, I’ve chosen a quote from environmentalist Edward Abbey, who said:
“Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.”
Now that’s a wake-up call, isn’t it? Abbey was talking about unchecked consumption—whether it’s the way we use resources or the way we accumulate possessions. It’s a reminder that constantly acquiring more without purpose or reflection can lead us down a path that’s unhealthy for both ourselves and the planet.
Think about it: how often do we find ourselves collecting things not because we need them, but because we’re caught up in the idea of having more? Another gadget, another pair of shoes, another throw pillow. Before we know it, we’re surrounded by stuff that adds weight to our lives instead of meaning.
Use Less Stuff Day is your chance to break that cycle. It’s not about deprivation—it’s about focusing on what truly adds value. When you stop chasing “more,” you can start appreciating what you already have. And believe me, the relief of a clean closet is second only to the joy of realizing you don’t need to untangle any wires to find out which one is doodad is plugged into the flux capacitor.
You know what I mean... I think.
So, how can you celebrate today? Maybe it’s letting go of those “someday” items you’ve been holding onto—like the ice cream maker that’s been used once or that gym equipment doubling as a laundry rack. Or, perhaps it’s as simple as saying no to impulse buys that bring momentary happiness but long-term clutter.
Abbey’s quote challenges us to consider not just our personal lives but also our collective habits as a society. When we consume thoughtfully, we not only lighten our own load but also create a healthier planet for everyone. It’s a win-win.
And I have one more thought to add to this one. The problem isn't consumption it is wasteful consumption. If you need or want something that you will use then don't feel guilty about buying it. As we move into a greener economy the production of goods and services is becoming less detrimental to the environment. And maybe then we can look at growth as a good thing again...
That’s it for today’s episode of The Daily Quote. Thank you for spending part of your day with me, reflecting on how less can be more. Remember Edward Abbey’s words as you tackle today: don’t grow for the sake of growth. Instead, grow with intention.
I’ll see you tomorrow, but until then, keep it simple and stay inspired. Take care!
