Since 2014, Maren has focused on understanding two related problems: what are the emotional, psychological, and social obstacles grad students and PhDs face when they leave academia; and what is the process by which PhDs successfully make career transitions.

Research shows that graduate students and PhDs experience depression and anxiety at 6x the rate of the general population. Often, the anxiety and depression is connected to uncertainty about careers and futures.

In this episode, Maren shares some of the research findings she and the Beyond Prof team have uncovered about the obstacles PhDs face, and the process of a successful PhD career transition.
