Can I ask you, when was the last time you praised God? And when you did, how did you praise Him? Those aren’t such bad questions to be asking ourselves on a Sunday when, traditionally, Christians around the globe are gathering in worship services.

How often have you been in a service singing some praise or worship song, and instead of focussing on God, you allowed your mind to wander? And then some family showed up late, so while those alleged words of praise were on your lips, your head turned, your eyes wandered, and you thought to yourself, Those people are always late. What’s the matter with them?!

Then you have to ask yourself, are you really, truly praising the God who sent His Son to save you? Reality check. Here’s the last Psalm in the Bible.

Psalm 150:1-6 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his Temple! Praise him in heaven, his strong fortress! Praise him for the great things he does! Praise him for all his greatness! Praise him with trumpets and horns! Praise him with harps and lyres! Praise him with tambourines and dancing! Praise him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise him with loud cymbals! Praise him with crashing cymbals! Everything that breathes, praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

As I reflect on that psalm, the adjectives that spring to mind to describe the sort of praise that the psalmist’s writing about are things like gusto, passion, enthusiasm. Is that how you praise God? Because I’m pretty sure that He doesn’t care all that much about whether or not you’re singing in tune. What He cares about is what’s going on in your heart.

Everything that breathes, praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
