In the twenty-first episode of Filosofisk podcast (the fourth one in English), we are joined by Katharina Berndt Rasmussen and Katherine (Kathy) Puddifoot to discuss implicit bias. What is an implicit bias? Are implicit biases under our rational control, or are we unable to influence the biases that we have? Should implicit bias be understood mainly as a problem concerning individuals and their psychological attitudes, or is it better understood as a structural problem? The guests’ philosophical recommendations: “How Stereotypes Deceive Us” (2021), book by Katherine Puddifoot; “An Introduction to Implicit Bias: Knowledge, Justice, and the Social Mind” (2020), anthology edited by Erin Beeghly and Alex Madva; and “Understanding Bias” (2024), special issue of the journal Philosophical Psychology, guest edited by Katherine Puddifoot. Filosofisk podcast publishes philosophical discussions (usually in Swedish, but sometimes in English) with invited guests. The hosts are Stina Björkholm, Olle Risberg and Nils Sylvan. The podcast is made in association with Filosofisk tidskrift, the publisher Thales and the Department of Philosophy at Uppsala University. This particular episode is also made in association with the research project ““If you’re all egalitarians, how come you’re so racist?” - Social norms, implicit bias, and discrimination”, funded by the Swedish Research Council. New episodes of the podcast are released once every two months, with a slightly longer summer break.
