Consuelo, Our aim is to orient a wide audience about key issues in education that are facing our Latino community as well as our country’s future. Consuelo, “What do we mean by parent engagement in education?” Consuelo speaks to our audience: “There’s the theoretical and practical -everything a child brings emanates from the home… Parent education is about empowering the family not just about a ‘bake sale’. Dealing with the sense of ‘self’... Social Capital who do they give it to? They are going to influence their child EQ Social emotional capital...then that becomes the IQ...formula for success… Knowing that my own familia...a daughter of a working class familia and a mother with mental health issues. Who has these conversations in a safe environment so they can break cycles of trauma/healing...we see it in the classrooms… As a soldier I served my country for 20 years...there is no greater democracy until you are educated and are free to decide for yourself. Her father was functionally illiterate… Families...every job in the nation...social justice-access equity in the classroom...to go to the grassroots and work with school districts which are visionary with our familias...our parents have a phd in life...building from where there at… They have developed critical thinking schools. We need to allow and support and look upon parents as partners and give them the part they are naive about.” “Why is this topic important?” Consuelo shares, “When I tell my story I can relate to others. “I created the FLI” The only one in the nation that brings a super, teacher, parent under one roof...build community….at the center it’s about our children...a 10 module approach, own story, impact of behavior, visioning, celebrate. How do you measure? Grades? Consuelo, “We have learned that schools should be organized holistically internally to bring parents in... “How does this work?” What are your recommendations? What can schools do to enhance parent education?” Consuelo shares that the traditional approach does not bring you the results...hours need to be convenient for the community. “...we need to meet with our grassroots leaders...why do we come during our working hours? You have good intentions but what do we do? Start small and go deep...earn their trust...help us to help the community. Not the hierarchical -working with community is an economic issue...a workforce development issue...we need to push the whole community to listen to their real needs.
