Episode Notes

This week, Kayla and Yousef are joined by Jeff Thomas, a Governor General Award-winning Indigenous photographer. Jeff provides us with some background on his photographic work which began in the 1970s as a response to the representation of Indigenous people through historical photography, and how it has grown and changed since becoming disabled. Jeff talks about turning photographs used for propaganda into tools of revitalization, and how he’s trying to continue the storytelling tradition in his family, blending this with new technologies such as 3D scanning and drones.

In his work Indians on Tour, Jeff explains how he plays with Indigenous presence where it wouldn’t otherwise be visible, by photographing miniature figurines all over the world.
