This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for January 25th, 2021.
While the coronavirus and its variants are all over the world, increasingly, world governments appear convinced that keeping each other out is part of the answer. The U.S. is banning non-U.S. citizens coming from South Africa, Brazil, the U.K., Ireland and 26 countries in Europe. Israel is banning all incoming and outgoing passenger flights until the end of January.
Mexico is set to surpass 150,000 deaths from COVID-19, one of the world's highest death tolls. Its death count is closing the gap with India, a country whose population is several times larger. And Mexico’s President announced he has tested positive, though his symptoms are mild.
Taiwan will more than double the number of people who have to quarantine at home for 14 days to more than 5,000. It’s trying to contain a domestic cluster of COVID-19 connected to a hospital. Overall, Taiwan has done exceptionally well. It currently only has 95 active cases being treated in hospital.
Not so in the United States. An Associated Press analysis shows more than 40% of Americans now live in areas running out of ICU space, with only 15% of beds still available. Hospitalizations are still particularly high in the West and South, with over 80,000 COVID-19 patients in those regions.
Amidst talk of requiring a vaccination passport to travel, England’s deputy chief medical officer says even if you’ve been vaccinated, you can you still pass the coronavirus on to other people. His point is being vaccinated does not free anyone from lockdown, distance, and masking restrictions.
In the United States cases were down 34%, deaths down 4%, and hospitalizations down 7% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 8th.
There are now 9,862,996 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Arizona, and Georgia.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Forest, PA. Dimmit, TX. Montour, PA. Chattahoochee, GA. San Miguel, CO. Hemphill, TX. Petersburg, VA. Zavala, TX. Richmond, VA. And Hopewell, VA.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Arizona, South Carolina, Rhode Island, California, and New York.
There’ve been a total 419,204 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.68%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 298. Texas 222. New York 176. Florida 126. North Carolina 109. Pennsylvania and Louisiana 82. Massachusetts 69. And Arizona and South Carolina 68.
Globally, cases were down 17%, and deaths up 9% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.
Globally, there are 25,886,055 active cases.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 135,182. The U.K. 30,004. Brazil 28,346. Russia 21,127. And Mexico 20,057.
