• Paul explains in this text “what” it means to have no confidence in the flesh as well as “why” we should have no confidence in the flesh. There is much lose by having confidence in the flesh and much to gain by counting it all loss.

Introduction

1. Paul’s argument (4-7): Have no confidence in the flesh because God’s standard is impossible to keep.

• Evidence of this reality is clear from Paul’s own testimony

2. Paul’s conclusion (7-9): if my inherited and earned advantages cannot save me, they are worthless and I count them all as loss.

• Why should I count them all as loss? - That I may gain Christ and be found in Him
