Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 26 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 02 May 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In rugby union: With less than 100 days until the Olympic Games Paris 2024 gets underway, the action at the Singapore 7s will be intense from start to finish with World Rugby’s revamped competition formula set to deliver fans even more excitement, jeopardy and entertainment.
Under the new HSBC SVNS 2024 model, the Top 8 teams based on cumulative series points at the conclusion of the seventh round in Singapore will secure their place in the 'winner takes all' Grand Final in Madrid on 31 May-2 June.
Seven men’s and women’s teams have already secured their spots in the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid. Great Britain and Brazil will battle for the all-important eighth spot in the women’s standings while the USA currently occupy eighth place in the men’s standings but face competition from Great Britain, Spain and Samoa.
The four lowest ranked men’s and women’s teams at the end of the Singapore event will join the top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 in a high stakes promotion and relegation tournament in Madrid.
In rugby league: South Sydney Rabbitohs Chief Executive Officer Blake Solly claims they gave axed Head Coach Jason Demetriou “every single opportunity” before eventually deciding he wasn’t the right man to lead the Club after two board meetings in 24 hours were needed to come to the decision.
Jason Ds agent claimed Souths process was “extremely cruel”.
Asked if Wayne Bennett had been contacted as a potential candidate to take over in 2025, Solly said, “Wayne is one of the coaches we will talk to.
“Wayne had great success, he left on very good terms. We will speak to Wayne and if he’s available and interested certainly will progress that.”
In football: Our world famous tip for the UEFA Champions League semifinal today: PSG to bongo Borussia Dortmund, although PSG’s dominance has not translated into Europe over the 12 years the Club has been funded by Qatar. In the other semifinal yesterday: Real Madrid 2-2 Bayern in Munich.
In SportsBiz: LeBron James has made more than US$479Million in on-court career earnings at the Los Angeles Lakers, so he’ll break the half-billion-dollar mark no matter what happens next season.
The maximum value of a projected three-year contract extension LeBron James would be eligible to sign with the Lakers if he opts out of his US$51.4M player option for the 2024–25 NBA season, according to Spotrac is US$161.9M.
After the Nuggets eliminated Los Angeles from the playoffs Monday night, James, 39, was noncommittal about his future with the team.
In combat sports: Former World Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s July 20 fight against YouTube fake boxer Jake Paul in Dallas has been sanctioned as a professional bout, fighters and promoters announced on yesterday.
The fight will be over eight two-minute rounds with the result to count on the record of both Paul and Tyson, who lost his last official bout in 2005.
Tyson, 50-6 with 44 knockouts, has not won a fight since beating Clifford Etienne in 2003.
There had been concerns over sanctioning anything more than an exhibition due to the age difference of the fighters. Paul is 27. Tyson turns 58 on June 30.
“Mike Tyson wanted it to be a pro fight. Netflix wanted it to be a pro fight. So I agreed to make it a pro fight. Winner takes all,” Paul posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The bout will be at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
And that’s a wrap!
