145 - Snackpod Family Potluck ft. many extremely cool people
Manage episode 328465581 series 2739852
It's a super special excellent amazing NOT AN ELECTION special episode!
We are heartily sick of the boring, reactionary, useless and misguided policies that are being floated, proposed and discussed during this election campaign. So we thought we would reach out to some of our extended Snackpod family who work or volunteer or study or live or care about various issues and topics to ask, what would an actual GOOD policy be?
The potlucks we're serving this week are...
Feminism: Leah from Loud Angry & Not Sorry gives some wide-ranging and incredible policy suggestions around gendered inequality. If you want more from Leah you can check out their podcast here: https://loudandangry.podbean.com/
Housing: David Kelly told us about housing policy, and blows our minds with some actually meaningful analysis instead of the nonsense housing policies that our politicians are proposing. Listen to a longer interview Zac did with David here: https://auspolsnackpod.podbean.com/e/075-pub-lunch-housing-with-david-kelly/ And follow him on Twitter: https://twitter.com/davelkelly
Climate: Policy mastermind Sam talks to us about coal seam gas, fugitive emissions, and dodgy carbon accounting.
Fashy Fash: It couldn't be anyone other than Tom Tanuki, talking about how "leaders" can and should oppose fascism through their words and actions. Obviously you should be watching his videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYgRzstFX-CwCGq781If_dw
Queer Emancipation: Guest from our most successful of all time episode, Tilde Joy, talks to us about their experience of medical transition and some of the policies could support that process. Obviously watch them stream at https://www.twitch.tv/ultros_professional and follow them on twitter https://twitter.com/ULTROS_PRO
Poverty and Welfare: Jez Haywood from the Australian Unemployed Workers' Union (AUWU) runs us through their key demands and why they're necessary. Follow Jez on twitter: https://twitter.com/jezheywood And support the AUWU: https://www.auwu.org.au/
Cops: JB - our guest who spoke to us about sex work decrim a few months ago - is back on a related but totally different issue, which is: why are cops considered emergency services?
Media: Our erstwhile colleague and future guest host, Tom McLean from the recently-finished Not Good Enough podcast talks to us about the media landscape, the ABC, and employment in journalism. Follow them on twitter: https://twitter.com/mcccclean
Human rights: Steph was unable to record but sent us a script of their strong opinion that we should have a Bill of Rights to protect people of all sorts. Follow her on twitter: https://twitter.com/GivenToRant
Elections: How bad are elections? King of nuance, Jess, talks about sortition and why it's maybe an appealing option but also unlikely to fundamentally change anything.
Huge enormous thanks to everyone who sent us content and also to everyone we asked and couldn't do it this time. We're legitimately so pleased to have such a wonderful community and we can't overstate how much we appreciate you putting in the time and effort to get this done at very short notice (oops sorry).
