"There are no human rights without a liveable planet." — Sherif Elsayed-Ali
Sherif Elsayed-Ali is a leading expert in the tech for good space and has unique experience at the intersection of technology and social issues. He co-founded Amnesty Tech, which leads Amnesty International’s work on the impact of technology on human rights and the potential uses of new technologies to advance human rights protection. Sherif also previously co-chaired the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on human rights and technology. He is the former Director, AI for Climate, at Element AI.
Sherif has been at the forefront of technology and human rights, instigating, among others, the development of the Toronto Declaration on equality and non-discrimination in machine learning and Amnesty International’s groundbreaking research on surveillance and online abuse. Over the past few years, he co-authored various reports on the theme of technology and human rights, including the World Economic Forum’s report on preventing discriminatory outcomes in machine learning.
Sherif previous speaking engagements include the World Economic Forum at Davos, Chatham House, Web Summit, CogX and RightsCon. His opinion pieces were published by The Guardian, Reuters, Aljazeera and Open Democracy, among others.
Sherif studied engineering and international law at the American University in Cairo and has a master in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School. He is now setting up a new climate tech venture, which will be a deep tech company focused on developing and deploying new solutions to enable a net zero future.
