E.H. Starts by drawing the letter ‘O’ to symbolise ‘ALL’. The ‘All’ has to be analysed because we are in a fallen state: fallen from wholeness into partiality; the preference for one thing rather than another. He draws a circle, and then a horizontal diameter to cut the ‘All’ in half. This ‘parting’ of the circle does not destroy the wholeness of it. The wholeness is a continuum and so cannot be parted, but we can talk about it being parted as an intellectual exercise to clarify it to ourselves. We think that there are parts of reality that we know about and parts that we don’t. (He shades the bottom half of the circle to represent the ‘dark’ parts we don’t know about.) In the upper, light part he writes ‘intellect’ and, in the dark part ‘will’. The intellect is definable, full of ideas. The will is not definable, not analysable, and cannot be known by the intellect. The will can interfere with the intellect, but not vice-versa. The cutting of the circle into two is an intellectual act; it has not cut the will. The will gives rise to the intellect and somewhere in the circle is a point of individuation where a being can become conscious of both will and intellect. (He draws a vertical line rising from the horizontal one.) Only a human being can become this conscious. Although the will cannot be formulated, we can become aware of it. e.g. we can become aware of using the will to make an intellectual formulation. (The drawing has now become an orb, the one that monarchs hold.) This is now also the drawing of a human being. The dark part is the sub-diaphragm where lie the unconscious forces of the will. Inside this dark part, all the forces of the will and the intellect weave together. The vertical line rising from the dark part of the circle represents the raising of consciousness so that we can become aware of what is inside the darkness. The intellect is a product of the dark will’s intentions and by exploring our ideas in this way, we can become aware of these intentions.
