It sure has been an interesting four years, and the season finale, better known as 2020, did not disappoint. These last fifty or so months have been the glory days of foreign bots, misinformation, white nationalism, calculated violence, conspiracy theories, and the cherry on top: an insurrection staged at the nation's capitol during electoral vote counting. Up until the eleventh hour, it became evident that freedom of free speech had been conflated with the right to reach. False information and violence-inciting rhetoric flooded social media. Ad views went through the roof in lockstep with the country's rage and growing polarization. The pandemic further catapulted big tech into record growth as small businesses got decimated, the middle class continued to erode, and food-insecure families reached record numbers. After almost twenty-five years in tech, Elijah Szasz was ready to get out completely, but something changed his mind. We finish up this first episode with an intro and quick background on Eric Colbert and Elijah Szasz.
