Women in Ministry 15: Paul's Writing Structure in 1 Corinthians 14 is Key to Unlocking His Views towards Women
Manage episode 306496817 series 2893782
In today's episode, we return to our study of 1 Corinthians 14.
In this podcast, we add yet another Bible study tool to our toolbox, as we look at how Paul wrote this passage, using a specific literary structure, known as a chiasm.
Knowing this literary structure will help us to understand more clearly how Paul made his main points and connected his ideas together.
Did Paul really tell the Corinthians women had to be "silent?" Or are we not reading and interpreting this passage correctly?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. How can NOT believing in the gifts of the Spirit limit the Spirit's activity in a person's life?
Reflect how:
Resisting the Spirit in any way can grieve the Spirit and shut down His activity.
2. Reflect upon your experience, church, and/or ministry. Where do you find yourself on the following spectrum: [Anything goes? Nothing is permitted? OR Everyone is encouraged to minister, but all must be done decently and in order?]
Wherever you are at, how can you find more balance?
3. How did being aware of chiasms help you to understand the passage better?

3. Read and study David Hamilton's article on 1 Corinthians 14, where he breaks down the passage and shows what Paul is saying about women.
4. Watch the above videos in order to understand chiasms and parallelism better.
5. Review the chiasm in 1 Corinthians 14 to see that it's there and indeed a chiasm. Understand how Paul speaks to both groups of people: the "anything goes" group and the "nothing is permitted" group through this chiasm.
