Today’s topic is cyber security, which is pretty topical at the moment given the widely reported attacks on large corporations in the last few months. When we hear about these in the news, it’s easy to think, shame on you, to the large organisation for not protecting their client’s data properly. But what we don’t realise how easy it would be for a cyber attack to happen in our own business, and the enormity and implications of such an attack.

The fact is, cyber attacks happen to many businesses every day. I think it’s fair to say that we all take a few precautions, but then we forget about it and hope for the best.

In this episode, I highlight that cyber security is something you should be aware of and give consideration to. I step you through what cyber security is, some suggestions on how to run a cyber secure business and what to do if you have a cyber incident.

There are six areas that I cover when considering cyber security in my business. I run through these including network security, application security (including cloud application security), information security, operational security, disaster recovery and business continuity planning and end-user education.

The main takeaway I want you to have is that anyone who collects data or uses a computer with the internet is at risk of a cyber-attack. If you haven’t yet given thought to cyber security in your business then I encourage you to do so. Do your own research and implement controls in your business that are bespoke and relevant for you.
