There have been many benefits to society from the global online search behemoth Google and the Facebook social media platforms, but there's also dark side – everything from consumer data privacy issues, fake news and political interference, to advertising market dominance issues.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigated these issues in the Digital Platforms Enquiry and have delivered a range of recommendations since 2019. The far-reaching effects will impact publishing, marketing, the advertising industry as well as influencers and creators.
