Who needs a dot medical card?
Manage episode 409003966 series 3403651
in the United States, individuals who need a DOT (Department of Transportation) medical card are commercial drivers who operate vehicles that fall under specific criteria. These criteria include:
- Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.
- Vehicles designed to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), such as buses.
- Vehicles used to transport hazardous materials that require placarding under Department of Transportation regulations.
Drivers who operate vehicles meeting any of these criteria are required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to undergo a medical examination conducted by a certified medical examiner. If they pass the examination and meet the medical qualifications, they receive a DOT medical card, also known as a DOT physical or CDL (Commercial Driver's License) medical card. This card certifies that they are physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safely.
