John 20:30-31-
The Purpose of This Book30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
By the time of the writing of his gospel John was an old man. He could remember being called to follow Jesus, the feeding of the 5,000, Lazarus coming out of the cave, and cries of the crowd as Jesus was crucified. John could recall seeing Jesus ascending into the clouds. There were at this time already the gospels by Mathew, Mark, and Luke. But John saw that something was being missed by the readers of the other accounts.
John wants you to know Jesus, such that you may believe and have everlasting life. John's gospel uses some words more repetitively than any other gospel because of this upward focus.
John looks at Jesus's identity and the work of Jesus.
- John looks at Jesus through the lens of eternity - John 1:1-4
- John looks at Jesus through the lens of divinity - John 8:28
- John looks at Jesus through the lens of creation - John 1:10
All of this comes together such that we should see that Jesus came to earth for us that we may receive eternal life.
