For Dan Sileo it was love at first sack.As a standout defensive lineman for Connecticut’s Stamford Catholic High School, he was voted to the 1981 Connecticut Coaches All-State Team. Dan loves to talk about the time he sacked fellow high school All-Stater and future NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young when they faced each other. Dan even has the pictures to prove it!Sileo went on to play college football at the University of Maryland and was part of the 1983 ACC Championship team. Eventually, Dan transferred to the University of Miami, whereas a pre-season All American pick, he became part of a legendary 1986 defensive line. Dan ranked first in forced fumbles with 8 and third in sacks with 6. The #1 ranked 11-0 ’86 ‘Canes team was voted one of the most hated in college football. They lost the National Championship in a heartbreaker to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. The ’87 season was a different story. Once again Dan was a pre-season All American pick as the ‘Canes went on to a 12-0 season under Head Coach Jimmy Johnson. They defeated Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl for the 2nd of 5 National Championships for the U. According to SB Nation, Dan Sileo is considered the greatest Miami Hurricane ever from the New England area.Sileo is still considered the strongest player in U.M. program history as he bench pressed 535 pounds and squatted 700 pounds.Dan was drafted in the ‘87 NFL Supplemental Draft by Head Coach Ray Perkins and the Tampa Bay Bucs, joining fellow U.M. teammate and #1 draft pick Vinny Testaverde. By 1989 Dan would rejoin Head Coach Jimmy Johnson with the Dallas Cowboys and continue in the NFL and CFL until he retired in 1994.
