On October 21, 2021, while on a New Mexico movie set, actor Alec Baldwin pointed an actual gun, an inherently dangerous instrument, at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, without first ensuring the gun was unloaded, and killed her without legal justification.
This conduct and outcome are a textbook example of a criminally reckless killing, often referred to as an involuntary manslaughter, a felony remarkably good for a mere 18 months under New Mexico law.
However, an argument can also be made for felony murder, which can carry a life sentence.
A few days ago New Mexico District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies asked state authorities for more than $600,000 in special funding in preparation for up to four separate criminal trials over the killing of Ms. Hutchins. Specifically called out as a possible criminal defendant in these trials? Alec Baldwin
All of this brings Baldwin's killing of Ms. Hutchins back into the news, and that in turn warrants yet another law-based yet plain-English explanation for Baldwin's criminal liability in this case. And where better for THAT than Law of Self Defense?
